Reversing camera caused nearly all drive systems to crash

  1. I was wondering if anyone else have had any problems with the reversing camera?

    TLDR:
Problem:The camera was faulty and the car's drive computer crashed system by system while driving.
Fix: The camera was changed to new one and everything is fine

    Long story:
We had driven for ~80km (~50mi) and suddenly the SCC went of and warnings for SCC, LKA and FCA came on. The nearest Hyundai service was only 30km (~18mi) away from us so we decided to drive there because we were already headed that way. (Not that bad. We can continue.)

Next the battery level disappeared from the instrument cluster and the speed showed 0 km/h constantly. Only the car's navigator showed our speed. (Okay, there's something seriously wrong. But we had only 10km (~6mi) to go.)

Next the instrument cluster started to blink and all the warning texts came on a constant loop. The car beeped (sounded the alarms tones) nonstop and everything blinked. Still driving like a charm no problem. (We pulled over but were so close we drove the last two kilometres there.)

Made it to the service place and asked if they can check out the car. They had an opening an hour later. No luck that day. Next day they called and the conclusion was a bad CAN connection on the reversing camera. They disconnected it and went to a test drive. Everything worked fine and we could continue our 800km (~500mi) journey to south. Next week we got the new camera installed and everything has been fine for 4 months. (So far.)

Ps. It was an absolute nightmare to deal with the fact that someone has decided to connect the reversing camera and trunk unlock in the same wiring. We had to load and unload all our stuff from the backseats the whole time. When the trunk was empty we used the manual open that works with the key (or a stick of similar size) to open the latch mechanically.

All in all the car has been over my expectations and will keep it for a long time. This just was an interesting electrical fault that occurred.

Just another object lesson on how dependent on the networks these cars are. Including the
cross-routing between them that the "gateway module" does. A short or leak to ground anywhere
can take it out, and is often subtle to diagnose.

I used to crash Gen2 Prius with faulty OBD2 dongle ages ago.
It was similar lightshow of faults and problems. :)
But after disconnect Prius cleaned up all the faults after two “reboots”. :p
