The center console seems like such a wasted space. I came across the following and was thinking of turning it into a Qi Wireless charging pad. I would like to get thoughts/opinions about this concept?
You can get flat ones like this: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Qi-Certified-PowerPort-Compatible-Fast-Charging/dp/B01KJL4XNY or https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Certified-Wireless-Charger-Special/dp/B075V234VL or https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Charger-Charging-Station-Compatible/dp/B01FMDQK80 Which I think could work well. The samsung one looks a bit thick, the round one I have is pretty thin... I do have some extras so might be worth throwing one in the car I just wish that android auto was wireless / bluetooth
I like your suggestions. I was thinking more of a flat cover that lines the entire console. My idea would be something like this... that is also a wireless charger. https://www.amazon.com/Honda-08P10-TRV-110-Center-Console-Clarity/dp/B07BVJ1WPC
You can't on the clarity, I'm not sure if there are any cars with wireless android auto at this point. There is this deal: https://www.costco.com/Ubio-Labs-10W-Qi-Wireless-Charging-Pad-2-pack.product.100425275.html Which has 2 flat ones for $35, might be able to fit both in there to have pretty good coverage, but I don't think you'll find anything that fits it 100%.
Be careful, I think that's made for home use. It didn't mention USB cable so you will have to have an inverter to use that. If you have a charging pad that has USB and plug it to the car, it will charge painfully slow. You'll need to buy a fast charge USB car charger if you want to charge faster. I would recommend wired fast charging in a car since most people have short trips and wired is probably 2-5x faster depending on phone/car setup.
Hmm yeah it might not be usb, but I haven't seen any in a long time that are direct wall and not usb cable with a usb wall charger converter thingie. Sure direct is faster, but OP was looking for wireless to cover that center console area.
I bought that one from Amazon. It fits nicely and holds the phone in place. I have it plugged into the 1.0 amp USB port (the one on the passenger side).
As a general note, I would avoid wireless charging as it generates much more heat in the device than wired charging which will shorten battery life. It is generally much slower than USB charging as well. The slower wireless chargers aren't too bad for heat, but are incredibly slow. That aside, if you want wireless charging in the center area, I would take a flat wireless charger like in the first link as a starting point and draw or mock up something that goes around the wireless charger and holds the phone in the correct spot and nicely fills the console area. Maybe that commercial one would already come close, measure it up and see how it would fit.
This is the one I use. The auction cup fit perfectly in the flat space in front of the center vent right above the monitor. Locks your phone in place and allows you to access your phone at anytime without causing an obstruction.
https://www.uspmotorsports.com/Inbay-Universal-Wireless-Charging-3-Coil-Retrofit-Coil-Kit.html Use the above in combination with Honda’s mat and maybe thin neoprene backing trimmed around the coils and wire to act like a spacer to keep things clean and flat looking. https://www.amazon.com/Sponge-Neoprene-Adhesive-Thick-Wide/dp/B001GAD5G4
There is a lighter in the picture. Having any hard object between you and your steering wheel airbag is not a good idea in my opinion.
