Now there are over 3 million BEV's in the US (or 1% of the light duty fleet)

  1. This Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) page shows that in 2022, there were 2,442,300 EV registrations (which that website defines as a all-electric or battery electric vehicles), along with 1,012,400 PHEV and 6,291,800 HEV registrations. Adding up all the categories yields approximately 283,509,000 total registrations.

Based on 2023 sales data that I have been able to pull together, just for fun and mainly from Inside EV's and more recently the Good Car Bad Car websites, year to date BEV sales have been approximately 863,000 (for a total of 3,305,000 BEV) while total light duty vehicle sales have been approximately 11,280,500 (for a total of 294,790,000) through 3Q. 3,305,000 BEV's divided by 294,790,000 total is approximately 1.1% of the US light-duty fleet. I should note that I have not yet seen the 3Q report for Mercedes, Porsche, and Jaguar, and while I can update the numbers, those sales are not likely to change the greater than 1% figure or BEV total over 3 million. Also adding total registrations to 2023 sales does not account for any light-duty vehicles that were registered in 2022 that are not registered in 2023 for whatever reasons, and does not account for other minor variations or overlaps in registration.

The AFDC webpage does not breakdown total sales by automaker. Based on BEV numbers that I have been tracking from data I could find over the years, over 2,000,000 are Teslas, slightly over 1,000,000 are BEV's by legacy automakers, and around 50,000 are BEV's by startups.

  4. Will be interesting @bwilson4web to see how the S-curve principles apply, and I like how the article emphasizes the role R&D plays.
