A couple of gas station chains in upstate NY have started to install chargers. Namely Stewart’s Shops and Mirabito. Both have a small seating around and sell foods you could sit down and eat for 15-20 minutes while your car charges. I have enjoyed these and look forward to more in the future! Absolutely! How many hitching posts and watering troughs do you see around town? I do see some articles in the EV journals about petrol companies adding charging stations in Europe.
There are really two questions. One is the perceived need for the things - how many EVs are there that are out there that might need charging (keeping in mind that ~90% of charging is at home). And the Tesla/CCS thing isn't helping here - some gas stations are putting in Tesla, but that's currently useless for CCS. And vice versa (unless you purchase the adapter). The second question is how much land does the station actually have, and how many charging stalls can they fit on their lot.
Also keep in mind that nearly 100% of BEV’s in USA are purchased by homeowners. The non-homeowners market is virtually untapped at this point due to lack of sufficient charging infrastructure. As our transient workforce shifts more and more to rental housing, the need for increased numbers of charging locations will continue to grow significantly. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
Unnecessarily drove down to Plattsburgh, NY, today while I was going to my USPS box quite a bit closer to the border. Figured I’d just take the freeway and get a nice healthy charge at the free EvolveNY/EA station at Sam’s Club. Got down there with 21% remaining after a spirited drive, and had to enter my credit card. Boo. 21-86% in 35 minutes, $7.56 (tax in) for ~20 KWh.
Who said that EVolve NY stations were free? They use EA billing on their backend but are not part of the EA network. They were never free. Sorry you had to learn that the hard way. I hope you at least enjoyed the drive! Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
Lol as has been discussed many times in various threads all over the internets (including here), EA stations throughout the northeast have been rotating through periods of no-charge charging, usually associated with system or hardware updates. I wasn’t expecting free charging, just hoping for it.
Yes, Electrify America chargers have been free. I see your confusion, but these chargers are EVolve NY, owned by NYPA and not EA. NYPA’s network runs several backends including EA, Shell, and EV Connect. NYPA sets their own prices, which is a flat 35¢/kWh statewide. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
What confusion? I know how the system works. I know who owns the stations. I’m not confused; this particular station was free last week when I used it, and had been free for several weeks before that. The technician who was working on it last week when I was charging is an EA employee. This station was installed, maintained, and operated by EA, under contract to NYPA. Nothing to get worked up over, my original comment stands as written, that my luck ran out at that particular station.
Ok I stand corrected. There are other EVolve NY stations run by EA near me and they were certainly not free as part of the EA upgrades. I was also told by NYPA directly that they were not part of this upgrade and would not be free. So the confusion was on my end because I had (wrongly) assumed this was also true of the Plattsburgh station. My apologies. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
No worries. The pleasure of anonymous online discussion sometimes includes the risk of the original comments (in this case, mine) not being as clearly decipherable as they sound (in my head) when being written.
