InsideEVs has a new post up about the new car now, thanks to our sister site Motorsports.com. Not a lot of technical info yet, but I am amused to note it has a single speed gearbox.
Nope. Most production EVs -- Teslas, Nissan LEAF, BMW i3, etc -- have a single speed gear box, but it's not a hard-fast rule. The Rimac Concept_One has a two-speed gearbox for each of its rear motors. In its first season, all the Formula E cars used a 6-speed gear box. Last season there was a mix of different speed gearboxes and single-speeds. The Brammo/Polaris Enertia electric motorcycle used a 6-speed gearbox, and currently, the Tacita motorcycle lineup from Italy uses a 5-speed gearbox. Most home conversions retain the gearbox that came with the vehicle, especially in the case of VWs, which are quite popular to convert. (They tend to use smaller motors which can benefit from mechanical advantage of a few gears.)
