Sales tax goes by where you register the car unless you are registering out of state, then it depends on the reciprocal arrangement if any, between the two states. For example, if you buy in CA and drive out of state, you pay sales tax based on the dealer zip code but if you ship it out via truck then you pay sales tax where you register the car.
I tried getting this in PA and the dealer was pushing me to fill up the credit application online till I read your post. PA isn't on the list of ZEV states. No dice. I'm looking to get a commuter car for the tax credit I would be eligible. Its either the Clarity or the Volt.
$30,450 + $80 doc fee for base model in South San Diego + 0.9% Honda Financing no trade in. I tried really hard to get to $30k. No one would go that low. I think that I got a good deal, but who knows )
I spent a week going to almost every honda dealer in San Diego. I got to 30800. Nobody would go to 30k. They had already installed their 800 dollar "professional package" or whatever they called it so I like to think that I got it for 30. My favorite part of car shopping is when people say "If somebody beats me promise you will come back and give me a chance to beat them." Uhhhhhhhhhh.........................why don't you just beat you now?
Of course they do! And I want to spend as least as possible. I'm not blaming anyone. I just always find it amusing.
Also, it is one other way for them to know the competitors pricing. I have noticed that car dealers are now playing the "dynamic pricing" game just like Amazon. If you read thru these posts, it appears that no two folks have gotten the same price from the same dealer for the same car.
I went back and forth with 6 dealers in San Diego trying to grind out every penny. I'm definitely no expert, but here was my plan. I told each one that based on my home zip code, provide me with the final receipt including taxes and every little charge- all in. It was hard to get them to do it , but eventually they did Then I went back and forth between them to get the best price I got $30,450 +$80 doc fee + taxes. I did not get this $800 professional package. What the hell is this all about? Please share.
I bought in Oct from Penske and they had 11 left after me. So they've moved some recently. My salesman said they average 2 per month.

I bought a base model for $29,500 in Vermont. However, I did some searching using the Consumer Reports buying service (interred various zip codes) and found a dealer in Conn. that was willing to sell for $29,500. Asked my local dealer here in Vt. if he was willing to price mach. He replied "show me the quote". I did and he came down after initially only offering $1,000 off sticker price. I'm happy!
Why craigslist "$XXX OBO" cracks me up.. like why would I offer you $XXX if you are saying you'll take less up front
Thanks. Contacted every dealer in MA via email. Played them against each other. Now the $3000 dealer cash in my ZEV state made it on par with some of these other deals people are getting. My net 5 year cost vs keeping my paid off Subaru is almost zero accounting for gas savings, tax credit/state refund, and anticipated depreciation
Sounds like we used roughly the same tactic and got roughly the same result. We specifically wanted a base model, not a Touring. Our car was to be registered in GA, which has do dealer incentives. Our goal was either $32,000 all in including 7% sales tax in GA, or $30k out-the-door in TN and we’d handle the sales tax. Dealers in Cumming, GA, Knoxville, TN and Cleveland, TN all declined, saying rather brusquely we were about $3,000 apart, and we could hardly expect them to take a loss. But as I posted in my “Introduction” thread, Economy Honda Chattanooga got close enough that we pulled the trigger. Their online ad and sales proposal: Anyway, we put $3,000 down on a credit card, and have been told a check for $30,500 for the balance will have us driving a Clarity home today or tomorrow with all GA taxes and tag/title fees covered. But we’ve had enough dealings with shady dealers that we’re holding our breaths and hoping for a clean deal. I’ll definit post here what happens, for good or ill!
That's pretty much what I ended up paying at Ball Honda, but I had another $500 incentive (they have one for military, school teacher, etc.) on top, for OTD pricing of just under $33K. But I had to get Honda financing at 0.9%. Mine also came with (free) a dealer installed "protection package" (I am sure similar to your "professional package") which included mud guard, wheel locks, trunk tray (which covers only half the trunk but I grew to like it) and door edge and wheel molding vinyl protection. It was not a bad experience; once we agreed on all terms via email, I went in, took ~1 hr to sign all the papers, and they had my car ready with full tank of gas AND battery, detailed nicely.

Trying to find a touring from outside SoCal and have a some questions: 1. Is it normal for the dealer not wanting to take care of the sales tax and saying that's my responsibilty or could that be a shady dealer? 2. Has anyone purchased a New vehicle from out of state and can give some advice? 3. Any particular signs that the dealer might be shady.....I wouldn't be signing anything unless the paperwork was in order, which would be dealt with by mail as I do not plan to fly out to pick up.
