regen braking and icy roads

Yeah, supposed to get colder in the next week. But I think you guys on the Island are more vulnerable when it cools off with a strong outflow picking up moisture across the strait. I remember some pretty big dumps over there in the past during those conditions.

In any case, we are due, have had it pretty easy so far this winter. Last week it hit 16C (over 60F) here in Langley, and was contemplating cutting my grass again. It is still growing, with all the warm weather we have had.

Oh great, I'm supposed to fly out in the morning to Vancouver for a meeting, was looking forward to something a little warmer than the -26C low today in Winterpeg and the 60km/h wind and snow this afternoon. Its supposed to dump 10-15 cm of snow this evening. Well it looks like I'm bringing it with me, enjoy:)

Haha, at +5C and sunny tomorrow, it will still feel like the tropics to you guys... Not supposed to get below freezing until next week, or maybe as early as Sun.

Yeah, I used to travel a lot. And for me, Winnipeg in Jan was the same as Phoenix in July. In both situations had to run from the car to the hotel, to escape either the cold or the heat.

Drove my Niro EV in our first snow the other day. It was heavy, wet snow that was quite slick. Thanks to this discussion, I turned off Auto Regen and set regen level to 0. Felt much more "normal" in terms of managing the slippery conditions using coasting and gentle braking to avoid any slippage. Nice slow speed from which to rubberneck all the other vehicles that had slipped off the road. (Combination of bad conditions and poor driving by others.)
 
Yup, was out driving today, after some snow mixed with rain. But not able to test the regen/brakes as the roads were mainly clear, just some slop on the side streets but still solid traction underneath.

I was going to write a blurb on this but I found this blurb. One Of the best tricks I learned many years ago was the use of the emergency brake to stop in the snow on icy roads..The consul hand types were the best but even the older peddle type worked . So When I got my Kona it was mentioned that one could use the Park button to brake by lifting it up it does work. I tried it in the ice and snow the other day It works great stops you really fast and allows you to control your front end.. Of course you can't be driving 90 ks in the snow and ice nothing will stop you but if you are driving down a steep hill and you are unsure of the conditions to stop us the P button to slow you down. Use it lightly I think the ASB come on
 
Well, this is my first FWD car here in Canada, so I will have lots to learn, good thing /bad thing is that we don’t get that much snow here in BC.. but I live at the top of the hill (Coquitlam).. the drive to work yesterday wasn’t fun and super slippery (and I got the car only last Saturday). I think the tires aren’t that great and will have to search for some good winter tires (or all seasons) but the wallet won’t let me affording till next winter. And I don’t think the roads are very bad, but feels very icy right now.
Thank you for all the advise as I will be paying attention to that while driving this week.. next week is supposed to be warmer and hopefully the little blast we had melts down.

Well, we got some real cold here the last couple days, and it was well below freezing today. Not much snow, but enough to form an icy layer on the side streets in places (like hills). Main roads are salted so no problem there.

Anyway, finally got a chance to test for myself whether regen braking (in ECO mode) on ice triggers the ABS. It does NOT. When I let off the throttle and regen braking happened, I immediately felt the front wheels sliding, and no steering control. But a quick tap on the brake pedal triggered the ABS and restored steering. Of course I tested this in a safe spot, where there was no danger of hitting a parked car. I was pleased though, how well ABS kicked in and kept the car going straight. I believe this experience matched what a couple others here reported.

Now that I know how the car behaves on ice, I will likely use Normal drive mode (with only 1 bar regen braking) in severe conditions (glare ice), and advise my wife to do the same.

I have set mine to 1 and shut off auto regen just in case. Thanks for the heads up
 
Pedal E-brakes aren't so old; the 2nd-gen Prius has it. One of my standard tests
for surface conditions has always been to give the e-brake a quick stab and
feel what the back end does and how easily. A double-press on the latching
pedal e-brake releases the ratchet and lets it "float" for modulation until you
let all the way up.

I suppose the Kona's behavior will still be useful for this, but the only
modulation is effectively on/off with the quick apply time, and if you're
listening for skidding out the window now there's that insistent "stall
horn" beeping making it harder. At least it *does* release if the car
is under way [presumably sensed from the *front* wheels...]

I haven't gotten to play with this for real yet, but I can pretty well predict
what I'll observe. Supposed to snow this weekend...
