Ford Mustang Mach-E

I never expected Ford to make a big splash in the EV space with a Tesla-taunting SUV, especially not one with Mustang branding. Prices range from US $43,895 for the Select trim to $60,500 for the performance-oriented GT.

Distilling the marketing hype, there will be RWD and AWD versions in standard and long range versions:

RWD Standard: 75.7kW, 230 mile range, 0-60 low-6 seconds
AWD Standard: 75.7kW, 210 mile range, 0-60 mid-5 seconds
[you lose 20 miles of range for AWD, but get better acceleration with the same power]

RWD Extended: 98.8kW, 300 mile range, 0-60 mid-6 seconds
AWD Extended: 98.8kW, 270 mile range, 0-60 mid-5 seconds

AWD is a $2,700 premium over RWD.
Extended range battery costs $5,000 over the Standard range.

The performance oriented GT comes with AWD and the extended range battery, but gives up some range (250 versus 270 miles), but gains performance of 0-60 in under 4 seconds.

If Ford can deliver on this, it could be an interesting Tesla competitor.

Note also the announcement of the FordPass charging network. It looks like they're (partially?) partnering with Electrify America.

Wow that is 60K US for a first edition or nearly 80K Canadian, a little too rich for me plus I swore off Fords with the last low quality vehicle they sold me. I hope they do well nonetheless.

Did you mean RWD rather than FWD?

Nice car though. I think it will poke a stick in the eyes of many EV haters.
 
The base model (RWD, Standard battery) MSRP is $43,895 which is mid-way between the price of a Kona Electric Limited and Ultimate in the U.S. That Mach-E has less range than the Kona we get in NA though.

It has no heated seats and 230 miles range.
 
I dig it! Good on Ford. I bet if you put some non-traditional Mustang buyers (those who will consider something less than 5 Liter GT) in a good Ford EV you'd get sales a fair percentage of the time. The performance is there, all it's missing is the sweet V8 burble that some, understandingly I'd say, just really desire. For the rest of us, the more EVs in the market the better. Although I am really looking forward to see what the new VW EV's have to offer in a year or two, I'd cross-shop the Ford for sure.
 
A little too steep for my budget, but given that I own some Ford stock, I hope they do really well.

They could use VESS to emulate the sound of a V8.

It looks like Ford is following the path of Tesla with the OTA software updates. I wish the Kona had could have its software updated similarly, at least to improve existing features such as LKA if not add new features..

-comment deleted- I started to write my agreement. The more I thought about it, the more....I dunno how silly I really think it is. EV sounds and vibrations are almost a blank canvas. The performance is there. If someone wants to paint over it a throaty V-8, or steam engine which is piped into the cabin, sounds kinda fun, actually. Add to that some electronic wizardry to give the feel of the thumping ICE and maybe you'd get a few more converts who enjoy the chameleon like qualities that EV's have to offer. The point is to give people what they like to increase EV adoption. So is it silly? I'm not as sure as I first thought I was......
 
Fake engine sounds on the interior sound system are nothing new. We can only hope that this is what Ford is talking about. I just find it sad that people are so addicted to noise that it has to be offered as a selling point.

The "Mach-E" sounds like a good name for a BEV with good acceleration.

But slapping a "Mustang" badge on a CUV that's so non-sporty that you can't even do a tire burnout... that's just cheapening the famous "Mustang" brand. Ford should be castigated for that sin! They should have waited until they wanted to sell a BEV sports car before using the "Mustang" badge.
