2020 Kona

I've been googling to see when the 2020 is supposed to be available, but haven't found many details. I also understand that the US version of the 2020 will come with a battery warming system. I live in NH, so that might be a good thing to have for the winter. Trying to figure out if I should wait for the 2020 or get the 2019 in the next month or so...

Does anyone have any more information? Or speculation? :)
 
if you plan on fast charging under 15°C you might want to wait for the battery heater if offered, see my graph below. It's not clear yet if, or when that comes on when using AC charging, for example at home. After driving for a couple of hours the battery will likely be warm enough to not need the heater.

My Kona in NZ has all the battery care options despite being the base trim and in our climate not really needing any of them. It was the first shipment and configured for the Irish market due to no NZ-specific trim being available at the time.

Interesting, so the battery warmer really only helps for fast charging? I don’t expect to do that a lot or at all actually. I’d mostly be charging at home or at the office with a level 2 charger. My garage is not heated and it does go down to -10C or even -20C at times in the winter here. Would AC charging still be effective at that temperature?

I read that the 2020 is also supposed to have a 10 inch screen, but not sure if that comes standard or is an upgrade.. also a 3-phase charger, but that might only be for Europe.

It also helps with winter range. Especially if you pre condition the car while plugged in before you drive

Nice chart. At least we know it works the way it is supposed to. Billing rate (you must be charged for time-not kW rate)

When you say precondition, do you mean in a model with or without the battery warmer? I know you can precondition the cabin, but does that affect the battery enough to help with winter range?

Yes it will warm the battery too below a certain temperature. Not sure what the temperature is tho. So you start with a warm car and battery. It’s called winter mode in cars with a battery warmer such as the Canadian model kona ev

The 10.3 inch screen is just going to be for the Ultimate in Canada, or cars with optional in car navigation in other markets. 11kw 3 phase will indeed be only for European market. Ultimate will also likely get rear seat heating,

Got it.. So would the preconditioning matter (besides for the cabin) in vehicles without the battery warmer, such as the US models, which don't have the Winter Mode?

No, except to warm up the interior. If you get a battery warmer with the 2020 model, it should have winter mode.

FWIW, when I bought my 2019 in July, I made it very clear to the dealer that I was not in a rush and that waiting for the 2020 would have been perfectly fine with me unless he was willing to cut me a deal. Don't know how much that tactic helped but I feel that I got a good price.

That's a good strategy. It's a little more tricky here though since NH is not one of the states that the car is officially available in. So the one dealer in NH that imports them from Massachusetts has a little more negotiating power than any other dealer. :) Plus it appears they've been selling here like hotcakes...

On the 2020, it does sound like not having the battery warmer isn't such a big deal if you don't plan to do L3 charging. And I don't really care about an inch or 2 more screen space. So technically I'd be ok with a 2019.. But yeah, I'm not in a rush either. 2 months from now is ok as well. That said, I haven't seen any announcements about the 2020 Kona anywhere official yet. So it'll be a while before it hits the US I'm sure.

The only risk I see is that Hyundai may discontinue the lifetime battery warranty at one point. Remember when Tesla would offer 8 year unlimited mile battery warranty.. That went away... and now, they have 100k or 120k miles warranty instead.. Hyundai may also decide to end the lifetime/unlimited miles battery warranty..

As a fellow New Englander down here in MA, I'd go with the battery warmer if it were available. Even if you only occasionally go on a trip that requires L3 charging, you'll really appreciate having it.
 
I am sort of in the same boat - not really in a hurry, but this will eventually be my next car. Do I scoop up a 2019 now while there are some around, or wait for the 2020? I could even wait until spring really. They would have to offer killer deals for me to jump on one now, and I suspect there is enough demand that there just aren't going to be the killer deals out there at the end of the model year.

Then try and figure out what trim level I want. I did a test drive, but they only had one Limited.

We are in Mid-Atlantic, so the temperatures aren't as bad as New England. But we get occasional dips into the teens and even single digits. I know someone who has a Volt, and he tells me that in the winter his range is about 2/3 the summer range. I could see using L3 chargers from time to time however.

2/3 range in winter sounds about right without a heat pump. 2020 will have a bigger screen- not sure if price will remain the same. I believe if you order now you will be ordering a 2020 model
 
Since I live in So Cal. Not concerned with battery warming.
However, out here, Hyindai is currently offering a $7500 rebate (on leases only) $500 military, $500 loyalty, and $500 first responder incentives. Since these are set to end Sept 30th , we decided to buy now instead of waiting for 2020 to come out.

As I mentioned in my post I don't have any data to answer that (battery heating during AC charging) one way or the other. And, I won't be able to confirm that until the next southern winter because it's getting too warm now. I suspect the battery heater would not come on because the charge rate is so low, however I have also just learned from another owner that a similar DC charge rate drop happens below 5°C as well, but it's still at a higher charge rate than AC.

Certainly in theory but as far as I've seen no one has provided any confirming data yet. I have noticed poor 'economy' (18 kWh/100km) during the first hour after starting off at around 7°C but I have not confirmed why and don't want to just guess.
