Things I don't like

It's been a bit dull around here lately so let's have a good whinefest. What stands between your beloved Kona and perfection? Not so much missing features as things that could have been better implemented or that are just not to your taste.
  • I don't like the black-on-black interior that comes with the dark leather. With the privacy glass in the rear it feels like you've got Dracula's coffin back there.
  • I don't like pressing buttons in the x-axis to move in the y-axis. Why don't D and R point fore and aft?
  • I don't like the row of buttons behind the steering wheel on the left. They're hard to see, one of them is actually two, and they have an odd assortment of functions.
  • I don't hate the nav system and I do use it because I don't have a data plan on my phone to use Google Maps, but I don't like that the map is badly out of date, particularly the charge station data, making a selling feature of the car essentially useless.
  • I'm surprisingly grateful for the many warning features, but I don't like it when the car natters at me about my seat belt the minute it's turned on.
Those things off my chest, there are way more things that I like about the car and after three months or so I'm still jumping into it at random times to go for a drive. :-)

That's why I changed pre-order to light interior, makes HUGE difference (but also harder to keep clean), maybe light seat cover would help?
Have you downloaded the new map version yet? (I have not, still use Plugshare for researching charge points, maybe Kona doesn't work so not listed on nav.
Seat belt audio warning is supposed to shut off after 3 minutes, but I haven't tried it that long yet.
I guess the only thing I can complain (whine) about so far is the nag ( "drive safely and obey traffic rules... confirm" etc) screen every time you boot up:(
Much rather have something like this: "Hey great to see you again, all systems functional, lets go have some fun".

Yes, that nag screen is like if you had to accept the EULA every time you ran a program.

Dark leather would have had to be my choice, given the mucky and doggy life I live.

Every hyundai ive owned, the Nav system sucks.
Grant it, the voice search on the Kona is not bad.
I used AA nav when i picked up car, almost 600km return trip and it chewed up alot of cell data, i was quite surprised.
 
I like the LKAS warnings and i usually make comments about Klingons, attacking from the side.
I briefly stopped to let SO out near Costco, other day and the forward collision goes berserk when lots of ppl and shopping carts go in front of the car..
 
I don't like the way the auto hold works when backing up i.e. spurts and not smooth like it is when you don't have it turned on and are reversing. Yes it is great for stop lights and hills, but you need to turn it off to reverse imo.
Car should be 6 inches longer and 6 inches wider and it would be perfect size wise.
Car needs electric passenger seat.
Car needs electric folding mirrors.
Car needs memory seats.
But overall it is a good little car.

I thought about folding mirrors but in Canadas climate, having them open/close could be risky if their frozen.

We are in Vancouver and it is pretty mild here with only a brief period of freezing weather usually, and we do have the car in a garage so it isn't like when we lived in Winnipeg and our eyelashes froze waiting for the bus. lol
 
Factory tires are rubbish. Canadian cars should be delivered with all-weather tires: Nokian and Michelin make good ones. Much better performance any day, especially in rain or snow. I had Nexens for only 1,000 kilometers, but I think my Nokian WRG4's are quieter, more efficient, and undoubtedly much safer. Cheap tires are bought by short-sighted consumers and put on new cars by irresponsible manufacturers.
 
My previous car was the Kia Soul EV, and I miss quite a few things. The home screen was more attractive and I really liked the tree that would fill up with leaves when you drove economically. I also miss the folding mirrors, I had them set to fold when I locked the car, it was a nice visual confirmation that the car was locked. I wish the trunk were a little wider, I have to take four clubs out of my golf bag to make it fit. Finally, why no usb or convenience plugs in the back row?
 
(1) Battery pack temp gauge would be nice & I know its a bit much to ask but how about a REAL kWh capacity remaining gauge (without having to calculate manually or go to third party like Torque pro/obd2 dongle)

I just switched my winter tires (Michelin Xice I3s) for the manufacturer's summer tires. My first impression is that they are firmer with slightly more noticeable noise and vibration on rough roads but no significant noise increase on smooth roads. I didn't notice any handling difference, though I haven't exactly challenged them much. Still waiting for wet weather performance.

If you are referring to the Nexens, they spin a bit on heavy acceleration in wet weather, just slow down and no problem, We tend to get a bit of rain here on the coast, at least that's the norm. The Michelin winters probably contributed to the less range/efficiency that you were experiencing and should also improve your #s.
 
Since Nexens spin on heavy acceleration, imagine what they would do on heavy deceleration if it were not for ABS, though of course braking distance in the wet is still affected. Unfortunately, skidding sidewise, another vector more important, is not reduced by ABS
Another problem is the steering wheel's leather cover---it feels like plastic.

I havent had the Kona long enough to try yet, but has anyone tried a planned heavy emergency stop, to see how it reacts?

I agree about most of those things, I would have preferred the white interior I just thought it looked really nice; but, I wasn't going to chance waiting. I didn't get Ultimate and you're making me feel better about that lol. I am surprised the nav is out of date, that would definitely annoy me too.

My issues:

  • How to update the head unit? In my previous car it had wifi and/or you could use USB drive. I assume it has to be able to be updated... but I'm pretty sure the car doesn't have the ability to connect to wifi unless I missed a huge feature.
  • I hate hate hate that I cannot put my phone on the wireless charger, close the door, and use Android auto. I don't want to have to plug in the phone - that totally defeats the purpose of the wireless charger! :eek: (this issue goes hand-in-hand with the first bullet item as I'm hoping a future update will permit android auto over wireless but again... my understanding is that wireless Android Auto only works over wi-fi not bluetooth...
  • Bird s---. I am absolutely sure that more birds have dumped on this car in 6 weeks than all the other cars I have owned in 30 years, combined. Really. That cannot be coincidence. (car is in the garage 98% of the time so it's not like I'm parking under a tree that has a new nest or anything). Anyway... probably can't blame Hyundai for this but that doesn't mean I wouldn't try to (in my head, at least). I literally cleaned birdstuff off my car in FOUR different places last night after driving like... 20 miles. In other news, I'm starting to hate birds.
  • I don't like the audio buttons being on the left, I want those on the right and the other controls (for like changing the dash options) on the left. Maybe it's b/c my last car was this way? I dunno. I just know in 6 weeks I'm still trying to change the station and volume on the right.

The Canadian map update did some minor software updates (a new Driving Info screen) via the SD card. How or whether that will be done for non-nav models remains to be seen.
