@Yvar can you get some closer up pics of the rail when you get a chance? I’m torn between the idea of a rail with the #1 landing pads or the #7 pads like @John Fritzen did. I actually have all the rest of the Yakima gear I need including the towers so this would not be too expensive.

Wow, didn't think I'd ever see someone carrying a kayak on a Clarity!
, here is the tracks with the bars off. We also have the option of removing the landing pads with an allan key, and reinstalling when needed.berryblondeboys

Ball park figure - how much does it cost to have custom rails put on? That might be our best option. We go skiing and canoeing (and biking, but we will install a hitch for that).
Track system installation, $250 CAD. Rack Attack. (tracks themselves were $210 CAD), so $460 CAD all in for the tracks.

Thanks - but I was wondering the price of the custom work to have them installed at a body shop? That is the piece of the equation I'm not sure how to figure out.
The $250 was the custom installation fee, everything else was for the parts.

Oh, that is great. Every shop can vary, but it gives me a better idea of what to expect. Thanks so much for this info. It gives us a better idea of what we should do and when. Like, for skiing this year, if all 4 for of us went, we needed to take two cars for that 90 minute drive each way. Doing that a few times a year is worth the expense, but doing it all the time adds up. Carrying the camping stuff and canoe, etc - is it worth doing or not. that depended a lot on how much additional cost we were looking at.
The lack of rails or racks was the ONE thing we were disappointed about with this car. Our ONE sacrifice as we were pretty much set on getting the Suburu Outback, but with tax incentives, this saved us THOUSANDS of dollars and will continue to save us $.
No warranty is void I hope by doing it. I don't see how it can be as with the roof.

The rails look great!
Long term on my set-up...
I had the rack and box on the car all winter long. Have inspected the mount points for stress, cracks ect... and everything looks fine.

Has anyone discussed those light aluminum trailers on a hitch, so you can trailer your boat or bikes when you need to, but keep the aerodynamics intact the rest of the time. Seems to me these vehicles live off of very good aerodynamics, which could be disrupted by any permanent structure on roof or tail end?

If the 2020 Outback had a plug-in option, I would not be driving a Clarity today. My 2010 2.5 premium was the most trouble free car I have ever owned. It probably had over 100,000 miles just carrying my son to Hockey tournaments. I sold it, but now wish I hadn't. My wife drives a 2018 Crosstrek, so we still have one in the family.
Would you buy an Plug-In Outback with 17 miles of EV range? Do you know there's a 2019 CrossTrek Plug-In Hybrid? You have to look pretty hard on Subaru's web page to discover that the Prius Prime's innards provide just 17 miles of EV range in the CrossTrek's heavier, less-aerodynamic package. The "sleek" Prius Prime stretches the same battery for 25 miles of range.

Yikes! 17 miles of EV range would be as satisfying as kissing your sister or taking a shower with your socks on. I would however really want the cargo room. I just tried to get a new toilet and grill (not at the same time!) home from a big box store and neither would fit in the trunk even sticking out and tied in. Both boxes were at least 25” on a side and wouldn’t fit into the trunk opening. There’s a price to pay for all this EV economy.
Can’t wait to get my Torklift hitch installed. I figure towing less than 500 lbs is the equivalent of a fully loaded up car, do I don’t expect any problems other than a range loss.

I would not. 17 mile range is not acceptable, and Subaru needs to do better. Dealers in my state are not selling the plug in version anyway according to my local dealer. Besides, my wife already has a 2018 Crosstrek with a hitch for those times we need to take a trailer to the box store.
I can't wait to see if Honda's Pilot Plug-In Hybrid gets it right (even though I'm not a fan of giant vehicles and would never buy anything but a car).
