2019 Canadian Federal Budget - EV Tax Incentive

Just noticed this on the Fed website:

Transport Canada will keep a list of eligible ZEV vehicles available for Canadians to view on the iZEV program web page. Visit canada.ca/zero-emission-vehicles to find out more.

Important: Transport Canada will be seeking voluntary supply agreements with manufacturers, and reserves the right to take models off the list if the department does not secure adequate supply commitments.
"
So hopefully availability should not be a major issue. Although we may only see the high end trims.
Except, again, for the Bolt. Just saw a new Bolt LT with few options advertised for C$42.1K+fees+tax in the GTA.
C$37.1K+fees+tax after the rebate.
We'll see what happens after 1 May.

The way as I see it, if the preferred model is not yet available, than the whole model line should be removed from the list until DELIVERY of the preferred model.
As stated "secure adequate supply commitments" mean delivery to an order, just by following the Hyundai Canada website Kona EV and scrolling to the end of "build and price" the result is "coming soon".

Because the (G word) fiscal year end has not yet occurred it would seem the right thing to do would be to re-write the budget entry to include:
(A) wait until first delivery of the Preferred model to activate the bill
and
(B) at least refund the Federal portion of the sales tax of the $5K rebate to those who are now paying for it
or
(c) enable the rebate to those who purchased this year (2019)
Don't get me wrong, I am all for EV promotion incentives, but not at the cost of those who have made the commitment and just happened to luck out receiving their vehicle before the selected date.

Hi All - I`ve been following some of the forum discussions for a while now, but this is my first post. Thanks to all of you for the information over the last several months, especially since I got my Kona at the end of January. I`m also disappointed that the Federal incentive wont be retroactive at all, but I did send a message to my local MP (John Aldag - Cloverdale-Langley) expressing my feelings on this. I have no idea if it will do any good, but it can`t hurt. I`ll update the post if I hear anything back.
 
I ordered a Kona EV a couple of weeks ago and was waiting for it to arrive when the federal government made its incentive announcement. I’ve since notified the dealership I will not be taking title to the vehicle until after May 1st (the dealer has a 30 day window to bring my deposit back or the deposit is refunded) in order to qualify for the new incentive.

Well that dealer has since clarified that their C$42.1K price INCLUDES the $5K rebate.
Buyer beware! I didn't realize that's how it works. Thought the owner had to apply for it?

Still, there's some other Bolt LTs at 3K below list on Toronto Autorader.ca.
With the rebate they should also be around C$41-42K.
Unless Hyundai or Kia bring in their low-trim vehicles (???), these Bolt LTs are the cheapest around for high range BEVs.
Or maybe the new longer range Leaf will come close ... whenever it shows up.
 
wonder if it will ever apply to any others besides the big manufacturers, like the makers of the solo. or from other smaller start ups who have production.
solo as an example, is a closer to $20k car than $40k car. that would make electrics more affordable by all.
 
Yes, the dealer confirmed that they apply for the incentives and take the $10K off the cost of the car. We wondered how the Ultimate qualified, but they said that the incentives applied to all cars for which the base model was less than $45K. Hyundai reduced their price in Cnada to $49,999. Konas are flying out the door...the dealer also told us that the single model accounts for 50% of their sales.

@ 50% sales will Hyundai be able to keep up the demand without cost reducing as most manufactures do considering orders worldwide? And when exactly are we going to see that elusive base model in Canada?
 
Slight deviation from topic but what have you guys done with insurance? Out here in BC we have limited options for 3rd party (private) insurers. I’m at the top discount with ICBC and if I went with them for all my coverage it would cost me almost $240/mo!!! I can save about $50/mo using a private firm but must keep basic coverage on the books with ICBC. I hear there are insurance incentives coming in the fall thru ICBC but those current rates are outlandish to say the least.

Sounds reasonable, maybe-just maybe something can be recoup.
 
Tesla 3 SR+ is now eligible for the rebate. It's on the Fed website.
Apparently Tesla has put up a Tesla 3 with a low, software limited range for under C$45K, so that criterion is met.
And the 3 SR+ is under the C$55K upper limit. So yay!

Similar with me. Ordered in April, but didn't arrive until May. That's when the official purchase occurred... whew!

Has anyone else actually received the $5K? My dealership taxed that amount, so ended up being less. Is that normal??

Yes, as I understand it. The dealership gets the rebate, you get $5k off the regular price.
Some dealerships are advertising the price with the $5k rebate already deducted, some are not. So you need to look closely ...

You only had a 1mo turn around between placing an order and receiving it at Dealership? That’s *fast* ! I placed deposit early April and am still waiting. Care to share any details I could help ‘motivate’ the dealership I’m dealing with?

We ordered April 26, were told at the time, maybe mid June. In early June, we were told early September or even October. At that point, we told them we would take any colour if they had a cancellation. Two days later, they offered us a white one (we ordered a silver grey). We agreed and were told late June. About a week later, they said they had another cancellation and we could get a silver one, as we ordered. Yesterday, we took delivery of our new Kona! The answer to Yellerledbelly might be, tell them you will accept any colour if they have a cancellation.???

By the way, we got both the BC and Cdn incentives, so $10K off. They gave us $15K for our 2014 Tiguan with 60,000 km on it and we paid full sticker price for the Ultimate version. So...this purchase wasn't about saving money, although it will be nice to 'filler up' at home in her stall rather than go to the gas station.

Our salesman told us the Victoria dealership has sold 90 since January 1st. People ordering now are apparently being told to expect delivery April 2020!
