Clunking sound when reversing and clunking sound at the rear at low speed

I am starting a thread on this problem as it may be that more than two of us are experiencing this issue. Today when backing out in the garage, as soon I started to reverse it sounded like I had hit something as a very loud clunk occurred. It was very startling. My husband looked under the car and couldn't see anything. As we drove we heard continual clunking at low speeds. Each time I backed I would get a small clunk sound. I have booked into the dealership tomorrow. Another member here has experienced the same situation and is awaiting caliper replacement and the dealership direction from Hyundai. So if anyone else is experiencing clunking this thread is a good place to report it. Thanks.
PS I will update after the visit to service dept. tomorrow.

No clunks, but a related issue -- brakes squeaking when backing up. I'm not too concerned because this is probably a result of wet weather combined with the fact that the brakes are hardly used except in reverse so don't get a chance to dry out.

I took it in to the dealership for the clunking. The service dept. was very nice and friendly. Of course I only got one little clunk this morning and that was when I was reversing and settling car into a parking spot at the dealership. The warranty guy went out with me to try to replicate the issue. The only thing that come up on the test drive was on occasion the emergency brake lever would not disengage (I did have foot on the brake). Then at one point when I set the emergency brake and took it off I got a clunk. The warranty guy wants us to drive it for about a week (unless there are serious clunks continuing) and then report back to him. He is suspecting something faulty in the emergency brake switch. He thinks it may be in the switch itself that is pressed to put it on and off. It may be hard to narrow down as the car automatically puts on the emergency brake when in park. I'll keep you posted.

Yes. I didn't realize we could turn it off??? Can we? For the testing of the clunking, all I am doing different is letting the car turn on and off the emergency brake instead of me ever putting it on. So far with me not using it, I have had no clunking.

I just read in the manual that if you don't have auto hold on, the brake won't engage when you turn it off.

From the manual:
To apply the EPB (Electronic Parking Brake): 1. Depress the brake pedal. 2. Pull the EPB switch upwards. Make sure the Parking Brake Warning Light comes on.
With the Auto Hold feature enabled, the EPB is automatically applied when the vehicle is shut off. However, if Auto Hold is OFF when the the vehicle is turned off, the EPB will not be applied.

Thanks. I always apply it manually and I also have auto hold activated. I guess my butt's totally covered!

So I had the clunking issue so the dealer looked at the rear brake shoes and said that there was about 2mm of movement in the pads. They ordered new pads and after about two weeks they called and said that the pads were in so an appointment was made. As I pulled in that morning to have the pads replaced the service manager met me in the parking lot and said that he was sorry but they sent the front brake pads instead of the back brake pads so they must be reordered. After another couple of weeks the proper pads came in and appointment was made. They changed the pads and they said that the new pads were about 1.5mm larger. Now after driving the car around for a week the brakes are silent no more clunking or clicking. Fixed

Oh bye the way they washed and vacuumed the car once again. Since taking delivery at the end of January I have only washed once myself.

I wonder if this means older cars have different brakes than newer builds? Did they change the specs? I wonder if this would solve the brake noises expressed by me and others?

As far as the dealer knows this hasn't come to them in service notes so probably in the future they will have more info. He did say that there were a large percentage of issues with the rear brakes .

Part# please of the new pads so any of us with the same issue can be assured the same replacements(the rear ones of course)

I wish I had party numbers for you but they didn't share that info with me. I don't think they are special but they may be made by a different company . That's what the dealer thinks .
 
So I had the brake pads changed and that fixed the problem right up. The machanic said that the new pads were approx 2mm larger. The have another Kona on the hoist today and they were changing the pads on that one as well.

If it was a blue one around 10am that was mine (pads on order)

Ha ha ha yes it was yours . When I was talking with the service guys I told them that the brake pads fixed it right up and they said "okay good to know" and he turned to the other guy on the computer and said "just order some pads for the one on the hoist" .

They are experienced now so hopefully they come up with the pads for the back the first time :D
I will try to get the part#s for the right ones.

Had mine done today, what a difference, no more clicks or clunks-totally silent.

Waiting for e-mail with the part #s from Hyundai, recommend this to anyone who experiences the same .
 
My rear brakes are clunking now with every stop. Not hugely loud, but annoyingly loud. I will be booking it into to the service department soon.
