Just curious if anyone has replaced the engine coolant for Calrity PHEV, at what mileage and car age? How much did it cost?

I have yet to get a maintenance minder for engine coolant, but its got to be coming up soon.

Just a personal thing, but I almost exclusively base coolant changes based on time, not mileage. I would change it at 10 years, or earlier if it's contaminated or gets discolored (it shouldn't get contaminated normally, and if it starts looking discolored that probably indicates the coolant has started to become corrosive)

I haven't replaced mine yet, but I have topped it off recently. Turns out the Clarity has two radiators (one for the engine and one for the EV stuff) and three different coolant tanks (engine, inverter, and battery/charger -- the last two are separate loops within the same radiator). One of the coolant reservoirs is hidden under the plastic trim that the hood latch pokes through; over the years no-one servicing the car had noticed that one and it was about a quart low! (Zerex Asian Blue does the job and is available at most auto parts stores.)

MM #5 will be the signal. Honda states the Long Life Type 2 antifreeze/coolant has a service life of “up to 10 years or 120K miles”.

I believe that one is for the electrical components. A quart low might suggest a leak.

I recently had my 2018 Clarity in for an Express service at a dealer. Although this dealer is well-versed on the Clarity, they recommend service the same as if it were a regular ICE vehicle. And, of course they always recommend stuff that Honda doesn't ever call for (throttle body cleaning e.g.). It is fun to watch the facial expression of the service writer when he/she gets educated about the differences.

One of the things they tried to sell me (besides the throttle body cleaning) was coolant flush and replace (based on time and mileage-39K). I told them that I'll trust the Honda engineers, who spent a lot of time and energy calculating Maintenance Minder alerts, to let me know when that service is needed.

I also discovered that the Express service they do (oil/filter change, tire rotation, multi-point inspection) costs about half as much as the exact same items when done with an appointment.

Using the various obd2 reader apps to look at our Clarity maintanance minder data, I see that the coolant will be needed to be changed 10 years after the purchase date (initial PDI date). I bought a galllon of Honda coolant just after the Clarity was purchased but I have not yet needed to use any of it for topping up any of the various coolant systems.

However, I would like to know how to replace the engine coolant when the time comes (in February of 2028). The 1995 Accord we previously owned had a cetain procedure to make sure the system was correctly bleed after a coolant replacement. Has anybody copied this information whe accessing the Honda service website? If so, can you make it available?

Here is a pdf that shows the procedure for engine coolant replacement. Electrical drive train coolant is quite a bit more complicated and probably not for the typical home garage mechanic.

Interesting instructions. Most cars will have a bleed valve or a bleed hole at the very top of the engine compartment to bleed air. Don't see that mentioned in the pdf.

Coolant replacement on the Clarity PHEV is typically recommended around 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first, according to Honda's maintenance guidelines. Costs can vary but expect to pay around $100–$150 at a dealership, depending on labor rates. If you’re nearing that mileage or age, it’s worth getting a quote and planning ahead. I’ve always struggled with essays, especially on complex topics. This https://academized.com/write-my-essay service turned out to be a lifesaver when I was short on time. The essay I received was detailed, well-researched, and easy to understand. It not only helped me meet my deadline but also gave me a better grasp of the topic. I’m beyond satisfied with the quality and will definitely use their help again in the future.
Have you found it?
