After my most recent Twitter/X review, I've started stepping out of TSLA. It will be gradual but expect to be out by 1/3d on November 5th. Meanwhile, I'm researching LG Chem and BYD.

Musk admitted he has "Asperger syndrome" which is a type of "high-functioning autism." Like the Dustin Hoffman character Raymond in the movie "Rain Man," Musk shows characteristics of "autistic-savant." A brilliant engineer and manager of engineering teams, his Twitter/X behavior shows him going off the rails ... losing it. For example, Twitter/X:
  • Twitter - pre-Musk, I could find no value. Too much noise with no way to filter to the technical information I live for.
  • X/Twitter - current-Musk, the software changes have made it a much more useful tool. I can block the political hacks and see more of the content I'm interested in.
  • I followed Musk because he discussed technology but now:
    • He retweets political hacks and other nonsense I've blocked from the original poster. In effect, forcing my eyes to see the crap I'd blocked from the original authors.
    • Twitter/X business is dying evident by Musk suing advertisers for not using Twitter/X.
When I was working, if management presented a "miracle occurs here" report, I polished my resume and found a new job. I knew their fantasies would drive the company into the dirt. In effect, they chased off the employees they needed to survive in business. Sad to say, Musk has taken that path.

So I'm moving some of my stock holdings away from TSLA and seeking companies focused on technology and advancement. Perhaps not as rapidly advancing as TSLA has been but less mercurial. Apple comes to mind.

Never a good idea to have all your eggs in one basket. Lots of uncertainty with TSLA next few months, and beyond. Lots of possible reasons, take your pick. I do agree though, that Musk seems to have lost his focus on the car itself, and maybe too much on other things.

The recent Musk court win about FSD claims really raised eyebrows. Makes you wonder if you can believe any of his claims and future promises. Are they all just "puffery"? Is there not a law against false advertising?

His technology posts are balanced so I don't a problem. But his political noise, no. My impression is recently he is posting ~80% politics. It isn't the flavor but the quantity that tells me he has moved down the dark hole.

I'm driving FSD, v12.5.4, and it continues to improve over the previous version. I don't care if it is called "Full Self Driving" or "A Rose by any other name." Call it Harry Potter "Instant Death" and I would still use it because it is so much better than not having it. For example, my 2017 BMW i3-REx and 2019 Tesla Model 3.

The BMW has only dumb cruise control but its size and handling is perfect for "going for groceries." It has reduced my urban Tesla wear which is my cross country car:

  • 25,000 mi ~= 4 mi/kWh * 6,203 kWh
  • "Other" is charging at motels on overnight trips
    • June was over 2,000 mi trip with two nights to witness Starship 4th test flight
  • July, August, September are day trips further than the BMW, 106 mi EV range

Good news about Twitter/X. The "block user" works on those cited by Musk. So there will be an "I agree" by Musk but no screen estate wasted by the idiots. This greatly reduces the noise so I get more technical content.

Much relieved:
  • $247 - 37% sold
  • $241 - 27% sold
  • pending - 18%
Tesla still has good potential but not quite the "cash cow" in the past. Truthfully, Elon's recent mercurial behavior has me concerned. Time to "pass the torch." He has plenty of privately owned businesses to play with.

You're probably doing well to get out. Tonight could be a big disappointment with the FSD and Robotaxi unveiling. It will certainly not add to earnings in the near term, and probably no firm timeline when it will. That could send that stock down on a pretty steep trajectory.

I caught the presentation and decided it is time to let someone else be the early adopter. I've got 18% set for "Market" price Friday morning. As for the remaining 18%, I want to see the Q3 financials. Meanwhile, probably Apple as I've had good luck in the past. Also looking for Korean and Chinese battery companies.

Good news, another 18% went for no less than $214/share. So now I have this capital gains tax problem.

I'm negotiating a solar roof:

The preliminary estimate is $54,000 but I've asked for a starter system in the green box. To do the whole roof, I need to take down two front yard trees that provide valuable shade in the summer. I am going nearly "off grid."

The Tesla Powerwall requires a grid connection but I have a 16 kW, automatic, natural gas fired, generator. By putting the PowerWall on the house side, it will spoof the grid in an emergency. The generator costs ~$0.45/kWh so offloading it with solar saves money. Eventually on "Elon Time", the PowerWall is promised to have "off grid" capability.

I won't be selling my electrons to the power company. Instead, I'll put two 15 A. outdoor power outlets on the property lines with my neighbors. I'll leave them on with the suggestion of a holiday dinner, once a year. That way they can extension cord emergency power or backyard parties.

It's not a secret here that I am not a Musk fan, but I'm baffled, based on what I've read of the AI/autonomous vehicle presentation. How did he think investors would be impressed by running the cars in a small, controlled environment and with no hint of a business plan for developing them, even if they work perfectly, into a functioning ride-hailing business -- especially given how many times he's promised the imminent arrival of true full self-driving and then hasn't delivered? Is it ego? Has he fired all the people who would give him honest feedback when he has a plan that's not fully baked? I truly don't get it.

Elon has a long range vision I agree with but often short range blindness. So I'm down to my last 18% waiting on the Q3 2024 financial report.

I'm 66% likely to close out my TSLA holdings unless I see a reasonable path in the Q3 report that this 74 year old stock holder can agree with.

Some of Elon behaviors since 2001 suggests he needs to "turn the Tesla torch" to a new generation. He still has plenty of private companies to play with but when it come to my money ... I need better.

This may be a stretch, but am wondering if Musk's support of Trump might even have some business strategy behind it. If Trump wins it looked like all electric cars were in trouble. That rhetoric has changed a bit, and he now looks at Musk's cars more favourably and directing his anti-EV bias more to China. And maybe even some anti-EVers might also change their thinking a bit.

We know Musk is a risk taker and doesn't think like the rest of us. With the way Tesla has been going, maybe he is thinking with this new strategy he has nothing to lose, and maybe something to gain.

Supporting Elon's businesses by the gratitude of Trump ... I don't think so. But then, I've seen at least two individuals who "lost their sanity" overnight and Musk is an individual.

Like Coal Rollers switching to Cybertrucks and Model Y's? :)
