PSA: recall due to battery manufacturing defects

BMW of North America understands that 128 examples of the Cooper SE may have been produced with insufficient sealing compound around the two halves of the battery housing.
Interesting, so not enough window adhesive on the housing?

Thank you for posting this. I checked my 2022 SE's VIN on both the MINI recall lookup page and the NHTSA page, both reported my SE's VIN as not included in the 128 affected vehicles in the US.

Thermal Event is BMW lingo for fire lol Nothing for my vin

Porsche recently had a similar issue on Taycans that are being repaired in house. My friend has done around 8

My early 2021 SE is right in the recall window, but not showing up. Yet. These kinds of recalls seem to always get expanded. But maybe hopeful, since I've gone through three Minnesota winters and a lot of miles.

Yep i was saying this to my wife. These recalls get expanded quickly. However at Porsche it was those certain cars. They can track it down to batch numbers and what tube of sealant was used

It will probably show up in very humid regions for the SE. As for the Taycan & e-tron, they used LG's E66a pouch cells (NCM 712). The Chevy Bolt & Kona EV originally used the recalled torn/folded separator of the LG E63 (NCM 622).

Where things get dicey is with parallel wiring, so I am glad the SE is wired as 96 cells in series. Most of the i3 REX fires originated with the fuel vent line chaffing (eventually tearing and leaking fuel vapor).

My battery cover recall never showed up on that website but I got a letter in the mail and it was replaced. So, I don't think that website is very accurate for new recalls.

I've just been informed that my car is part of the recall.
Little surprise when I went in for rear brake pad change
They want to remove the battery to inspect it. -_-
Any idea what that entails?
I live in a humid climate. So hope all is well.

Remove battery, take the top cover off and look for signs of water ingress. If they find signs, you get a new battery. If they don't, they reassemble, with the right amount of sealing goop. They don't appear to stock batteries or even cells in North America, so you'll probably be waiting a few months.

I’m hoping my battery is fine because no faults with the car otherwise.

i think I read that they had 2 thermal incidents, 1 in USA and 1 in Germany. Are signs of water in the battery being found in a high number of the recalled?

Would rather not have to be out of my car for a few months.

Hello to All, I bought an Porsche Taycan battery module to bring it into an prototype vehicle. To ship these vehicle I need to have the Safety Data Sheet of the LG E66a battery module. Could someone help me or give me a copy ? Many thanks.

All I could find was these specs for E66a cell type:
LG Chem E66A

  • Nominal Capacity: 65 Ah
  • Minimum Capacity: 63,5 Ah
  • Nominal Voltage: 3,657 V
  • Nominal energy: 237,7 Wh
  • Minimum energy: 232,2 Wh
  • Thickness: 11,7 mm
  • Width: 104 mm
  • Height: 350 mm
  • Volume: 0,425880 L
  • Weight: 897 g
  • Volumetric Energy Density: 648 Wh/L
  • Gravimetric Energy Density: 259 Wh/kg
  • Chemistry: NCM 712
The E66A was made to be a direct replacement for the E63 battery cell. Capacities are very similar, but dimensions and weight are lower.
We have an E63 discussion in the Kona electric sub forum but the downloadable spec sheet only refers to the original NCM 622 E63.
Also much more data here:

When I checked in for my annual state inspection, the young new hire at the counter said that there was a software update and battery thing due and asked if did I want to have them also taken care of. Then I mentioned the last time I did a software update all my settings were lost and perhaps I should back them up or write them down prior. By that time, the senior guy returned and she asked him if settings would be reset. He quickly mentioned that the update hasn't been released yet and there are no parts for the battery. The last USB update reset some car's settings but not others, but this one won't affect the settings.

When I enter my VIN at the BMW site and they say nothing is due. This battery thing may be something different than the PSA thing. Wasn't there something about a hold down and harness discussed a while ago. Did not find it in my search.
