Just curious, have ANY of you ID4 owners gotten the long-awaited software update yet? I received the email on 12/6 that said coming soon. I called VW customer service today for an update, and they say they are releasing the update in "waves" based on VIN unmber, and the dealer cannot do the update until your VIN number is on the list. VW told me the VINs are getting pulled in a random draw, "to be fair" she said. My reply is that what would be fair is to draw the VINs in order of vehicle purchase date! I have had my 2021 ID4 for 20 months now with not one software update. Yeesh.

I just received this new message from VW. Things seem to be going from bad to worse with regards to the software update:

VWNA told me this am that they are planning to send out a “circular” (
) describing their software update plans by the end of March. This was in reply to a flame-o-gram I sent them about their dangerous STOP DRIVING NOW OR DIE bug, or so it seemed to my wife.
It’s clear to me that their update process was a ****show and they decided to halt it until they fixed the DEATH bug and brought over some Tesla engineers to teach them how to update software.
My fingers are no longer crossed, but whenever the update arrives it better have higher power charging, functioning CarPlay, and support for bidirectional charging - plus fixes for the tens of software bugs…

The update process has apparently resumed. If you look in your myVW app, on the service tab, there may be multiple recalls noted. Some people on other forums have already had the work completed. I have recall 97ZZ and service campaign 93P7

The details on what work is needed depend a *LOT* on exactly when the car was made, what the current software version is, and what type of 12V battery you currently have.
I called my own dealer - the woman I spoke with needed to clarify the amount of time required for the update (so they could schedule a loaner). I have a FE, so it is likely to be on the longer side of things. Still waiting for a callback, but I am honestly not in a huge hurry.

Based on VW's software history with the ID.4, it makes sense you wouldn't be in a hurry to become a beta-tester for the new updates.

I look at it this way - the software itself has been done for a while (that's what they have shipped in newer cars). The issue has always been deployment. We are supposedly getting v 3.1 of the software (a 3.2 was just released for new cars a few weeks ago).
In earlier attempts to get this going in Europe, it was suggested that if the tech were to follow the instructions to the letter, that the update had a higher chance of succeeding.
If I read through the instructions, there are a lot of seemingly trivial things that a tech might skip over as it might seem unimportant. But my guess is that this is done to ensure that the vehicle is in a known state - that there aren't parts of the vehicle that are awake and trying to do stuff that might interfere, and that the bits being updated are in the correct state. In the docs, they call this a "bus sleep procedure".
The document also has spots where it says "If you get error XXXX, then do YYYY" - I assume that this is just what they have learned in previous upgrade attempts, and putting it in the docs helps to minimize delays if the tech were to have to contact tech support.
There is a lot of attention paid to the 12V battery minder, and specifically there is a timeout which causes it to switch off after a period of time. So the tech needs to pay attention to that during the process to ensure that the 12V battery doesn't go flat during the upgrade.

When did v 3.1 first appear? How long were new ID.4s delivered with v 3.1? Is VW afraid to release 3.2 to existing customers or did they make changes to the ID.4 and v 3.2 works only in new vehicles? What a support nightmare it would be if different model years require different software versions.

3.1 has been out for quite a while - at least 6 months. I don't think VW is afraid to release 3.2, but my own sense is that they recognize that it has been a s**t-show and they need to get something moving. They didn't want to delay even more just so they could QA the 3.2 version on the 2021 cars.
The *claim* is that subsequent updates really can be OTA - but we will just have to take a wait and see approach.
Not sure if this should be a new thread - but I got the recall notice in the mail this week. NHTSA:23V040 which is the High Voltage Battery Battery Management Control Module Software update. I haven't experienced any symptoms, I don't think. Rarely I get a red or yellow ! that goes away. Anyway - they will update the software (to what version I do not know - but I will get details). I have a 2021 AWD made in Germany. I also do not know if I will also get a new "robust" 12 Volt battery that I may be qualified for. I take the car in today.

This is the same update - ultimately you will get the 3.1 release, and applying the update at best will take an entire day. Possibly more if issues come up.
Did you make an appointment with the dealer by talking to a human? Dealers seem to have limited throughput for this - some are only doing one car a week just so they can continue to provide service to non ID.4. The automated appointment tools don't seem to be able to capture this nuance.
You called it right. I did talk to a human but a different human called me to reschedule right before I left the house - it seems that they were trying to update another ID4 and it went sideways and they want a couple weeks to work the bugs out. I said sure and will be updated in a couple weeks. I'll post an update after that.

We wanted to take care of the regular maintenance, new tires (because the terrible Bridgestone's are down after only 18k), and the recalls including the software update (because we finally received the letter to schedule it ASAP). Volkswagen notified us that our 2021 ID4 PRO S requires a recall (Safety Recall 97ZZ) and that there is a potential issue with the High Voltage Battery Cell Modules (Service Action 93P7).
Long story short, the dealer told us that they can only do 1 car a week, that the whole process would mean we're out of a car for about 2 - 3 weeks and that the next available slot with courtesy vehicle is in February of 2024. This is no belated April fools joke. For this particular dealer, it appears, the wait time is roughly 10 months. Obviously we will call around to see if other dealers can accommodate us earlier. I was wondering if any of you have encountered similar issues and if you have any tips on how to get this resolved. Any suggestions or insights would be much appreciated.
Food for thought: Any chance the series of broken promises, false advertising, safety recalls, and issues resolving those same recalls in a reasonable time could qualify for a lemon law (in California)?
