Test drove the Ioniq 5..

I visited another Hyundai dealer today, and my best offer is now up to 40K. But the wife is still dead set against it, even after explaining the financial side of it and ending up with a brand new car, that is better yet. She was with me when we test drove the Ioniq 5, but crazy as it may seem, she still really likes the Kona.

Talked to my son (Tesla owner), and he is totally with me on selling the Kona and living with one car for a year. And he is working on my wife, too, so together we'll try to wear her down. Trouble is she has also talked to a couple of her friends, and unfortunately they are on her side.

Yes, I think I will put in a pre-order for the I5, just haven't got around to it yet.

That's basically the same reason I don't already have an I5. My wife doesn't like it. About a year ago I said we would look at the Etron Q4, which has basically the same starting price, and she saw it and liked it. And now I can't undo that, and she won't consider anything else, even though the Q4 has been hopelessly delayed in the US, and worse, should it ever arrive, dealers have promised 10 to 20k upcharges. My wife has left me no wiggle room.

Haha, wish it were that easy... But haven't given up. She knows I keep visiting different dealers for offers, and hasn't told me to stop that. So will keep at it, and maybe she will come around. I went through a similar process when we traded in the Prius for the Kona. She liked that car, too. Although once she saw and took a test ride in the Kona, she was onboard.

I still want to visit the North Shore Hyundai dealer who had the $53,800 2019 Kona for sale, and now is sold. That part of the Lower Mainland is where the big money is and probably the highest EV demand. But it is also the furthest from where I live (45 min in non rush hour, can be over 1 hour in bad traffic). So I need to pick my time, and be sure I am on my way home by early afternoon.

It's just like housing prices right now, shortage of supply vs demand. Plus the price of gas here in the lower mainland is helping people continue to look at EVs. I'm sure you could get the price up higher. Maybe even do a test run of seeing what demand would be if you sold it on your own for 50K.

To my surprise, he spent about 5 min online, didn't even look at the car, and came back with a 42K offer, best yet. Getting harder and harder to turn that down.

I wonder why they are offering you so much? Mine is a 2019 Ultimate with 37K km and I was offered 30-31K. Either mine was chintzy or yours is generous...or desperate for used car stock.

I don't know when/where you got your offers, or what the market is like there. You should do you own market research, and look at what is for sale in Ontario. Look at the dealers used car inventory and see what they are selling the Ultimate for. But certainly a big diff from here, by the sounds of it.

Ya, I'm not actively trying to survey the market...or persuade my wife .
I just got the quote when I was deciding whether to go through with my Ioniq 5 order. I might have been able to squeeze more out of them had I really tried.

*Checked Autotrader and 2019s with 40-50K km are selling for 43-45K. Clearly the market for EVs (and maybe used cars) is different between Ontario and BC.

Well, it certainly varies by dealer. My first offer was 36K, but has gone up since then with diff dealers. Part of me wishes that it is only worth 30 or 35 on the market. Then it would be a no brainer to keep it, which was my original plan when I bought it. Wife would be happy, and I have no complaints with it either. Drives great, great range, and new battery now.

BUT, I also learned that Hyundai Canada is no longer taking any pre-orders for the Ioniq 5, or at least the Ultimate trim. Best you can do is leave your name with a dealer, and when the portal opens again for pre-orders (not expected for quite a few months) then they will contact you and will take a deposit. It will then be for a 2023 model, with new pricing, and maybe new trim offerings. Also likely by next year the govts will raise the rebate thresholds, so you can bet the car makers will follow to have their pricing match.

Now I get it. The US dealerships that are adding $10K or $15K to the Ioniq 5's MSRP are actually doing a service for the public! By boosting the price of an Ioniq 5 into Tesla territory, these caring dealers are actually ensuring people who really, really, really want an Ioniq 5 can have one right away.

Yeah, that's one way of putting it. No markups in Canada have led to no supply. Hindsight is 20:20, but sure wish now that I had put in a pre-order last year...

Yesterday, I put in a pre-order for a Solterra. There is a better chance of getting that one before year-end than the Ioniq 5. And it meets another need of mine, being able to go off-road. That opens the possibility of selling my off-road capable Crosstrek (also has good resale value at this time), and going forward with two EVs, keeping my Kona EV.

Why do so many people believe that a camera lens will remain clear and useful when a rear window becomes dirty and opaque? I see this all the time in forums from those who vehemently pooh-pooh the necessity for a rear wiper. I'm not trying to challenge you specifically but it's a widespread opinion and it boggles me.

I liked my test drive too and it seems to be a pretty great car, I hope you enjoy it.

From what I understand, the camera is being placed on the spoiler so depending on placement it could stay cleaner. And who knows, maybe it will come with a camera lens washer integrated as well. Gonna find out when the newer reviews comes out. Of course, the deposit is still refundable.

We've still got an ID.4 on the way and an Ariya reservation. So none of them are getting cancelled until we've bought one.

I loved that the Bolt had a washer spray on their rear camera. So simple and smart. And on a car that's $20,000 less too. Sigh.

No rear heated seats, no passenger relaxation seat, no glove drawer and only the majority of the advertised features and needed ones like a heat pump in one trim not available yet. We stand a better chance of getting a warm battery for charging than we have for DCM or SFD 2023 options. Being the last country to receive the "launch" has a few draw backs besides missing components South Korea got and still gets; it's a general shortage of vehicles that reservation holders requested. Hyundai Concierge said the nearest dealer (not one you chose) was to contact you about whatever Hyundai graced them in allocation which was the lowest trim. We knew there was no obligation with the reservation, but at least let me say no to the nearest dealer that has a 3K Dealer Adjustment on the correct trim if not also the color I chose. What a cluster the execution has been.
