Carplay connection issue

I've been using carplay in my 2018 Touring for several years, and every now and then, I have to unplug / replug the phone to get it to connect to the car. Irritating, but not a huge deal.

Since I upgraded to iOS15 on my iPhone 12, I'm starting to see this happen more and more frequently, but in some cases, it just won't connect. I've swapped out the cable, so its unlikely that's the problem. Sometimes I have to restart the car, sometimes a unplug/plug clears it, and sometimes it just doesn't connect no matter what I do. Strangest event was seeing the carplay icon flash on the display then go away. Its gone from annoying to dysfunctional! Has anyone else seen anything like this? iOS 15 problem maybe?

Nope. 2018 Touring. However, that’s because we use a wireless CarPlay/AA adapter that plugs into the same USB port for a wired connection.

It sounds like you’re using it a lot and you’ve already replaced the cord (I assume with an Apple certified one?). Maybe the usb receptacle is wearing?

I've seen issues with cables. You have to use OEM or Apple MFI certified. I do have iOS 15.0.2 and no issues other than apps not working as they should due to them not properly updating them. Mostly Sirius XM which you have to control from the phone basically. Waze has it's issues but I beta test it so it's different.

I do plug in on every drive. Wireless CarPlay would be ideal if I can also use mag safe charging (iPhone 12 mini here) or figure out a way to add a wireless charging pad in the storage under the wings. I thought about those mag safe lightning adapters but they seem not to support data making them useless for CarPlay. Also, they're bit expensive for my budget...
 
I wasn't aware that you could get to carplay wirelessly. Could you let me know where you get that adapter and how it works?

I would love to know which adapter you have found for the 2018. Does it work well? Cost? Any advice appreciated.
 
On my end I had random troubles with cable CarPlay, especially navigation (either Google, Apple or Waze. It always happens after a relatively short stop of the car, like at grocery or shopping, never first thing in the morning. I got me a Chinese wireless CarPlay Adapter called CarPlay2Air at https://cplay2air.com/ for $99. It worked seamlessly for a couple of weeks, then it started failing to detect the phone. On second reading the owners manual I found out that for first pairing it had to be connected via Wifi in addition to Bluetooth, away from the home WiFi the phone connects automatically so I drove a couple of blocks away and did a restart from scratch 3 weeks ago. So far it has worked fine.
 
I also had those same disconnect issues since last iPhone 11 update with OS 15. I had to reboot the infotainment several times due to the issues.It seems like it got fixed after I replaced the cable a couple of days ago. Just wish we had the wireless Apple CarPlay to prevent wearing out the connector.

I had similar problems with Android Auto in my recently purchased 2018 Clarity. Eventually I resorted to buying a handful of variously branded USB cables and trying each until I found one that works. I concluded that 1) USB cables differ more than advertised, and 2) the Clarity is picky about USB cables. I have no experience with Apple products, but I imagine that Carplay in the Clarity may have similar problems with cable variations.

My first sign of trouble was the 6ft "fast charging" cable which runs Android Auto just fine in my 2017 Chevy Bolt, but shows "No device connected" for the same phone in the Clarity. Other "fast charging" cables either did not connect, or connected and then blanked the screen, or connected and showed a "not compatible" message, or intermittently disconnected and reconnected while driving. Eventually I settled on a 1.5ft cable that seems reliable.

All of the USB 3 cables I tried worked. However, I gather that Apple phones do not support USB 3.

So I suggest trying a variety of cables and see what happens.

I got mine from Amazon. Just search “wireless carplay adapter” if you have an iPhone. They are around the $100 price point.
 
I got mine from https://carlinkitcarplay.com/. Very positive experience with this device. Yes, it took 3 weeks with regular shipping. Support was responsive and very helpful in tracking my order. After a firmware update, it works great with my car. I can jump in the car with my iPhone in my pocket and by the time I am pulling out it’s already running CarPlay. No visible lag. My iPhone has great battery life so I only need to plugin for a long trip.
