I guess I've been lucky with my ICE cars. I had a 2012 Golf TDI, which I absolutely loved, that never needed any sort of repair in 6 years. I had free maintenance from the dealer for the first three years, and after that I did what needed to be done myself. Of course, there was the whole Dieselgate fiasco, but that worked out just fine for me because VW bought the car back for almost the same price I paid when new, so I got a new ICE car for very little money. It also worked out well for all of us EV owners, because Dieselgate is basically why we have Electrify America. I'm still sad about having to sell back my TDI (it was a manual and I could get over 50mpg and 700 miles to a tank on occasion), but my SE is quickly healing that wound! As a thought experiment, how much repair/maintenance would go into an ICE car over that ten years? I'd say $10,00-$15,000 every ten years isn't horrible, especially considering you're likely to get better (more energy and/or lighter) batteries by then. So the question becomes, which makes more sense: replacing the batteries or replacing the whole vehicle with modern features?
