2022 Niro EV listed at dealerships already. 2021 is the shortest model year ever?

2022 Niro EVs are now at dealerships, 2 months after the 2021 was announced.

This seems pretty bizarre to me even by coronavirus messed up supply chain standards.

The 2022 models now have the new style "Kᴎ" badge and the EX comes with the 12" touchscreen that was previously only on the EX Premium trim.

I saw a 2022 EX Premium on AutoTrader and it looks identical to my 2021 other than the new logo. Can't find any mention of the 2022 on Kia's website yet to see what the official list of changes is.

I bought the 2021 EX-P in July a few weeks after the 2021s were announced in June.

Now I wish I had known the 2022s were a month away..

JBW11, don't understand your compensation suggestion. Nothing unusual about next year's models coming out at this time of year.

Also, where are you seeing 2022 MSRP's are substantially higher?
 
It’s not the time of year that’s unusual. It’s the fact that the model year for 2021 was 2 months long and depreciation accelerated as a 2 month old car is now a year old. There is an expectation that release dates would be a little more staggered.

The MSRP is an assumption on my part based on the dealer asking price and his reference to the markdown. The numbers were in the 47-48k ballpark for a premium as I recall.
 
Doesn't look like there's anything different that I can tell.
 
As someone else mentioned, I don't understand the compensation suggestion.

Very minor changes from model year to model year barely effect used values at all.

For example Kelly Blue Book says the current value of a 2020 with 5000 miles in excellent condition is close to the same as a used 2021 with the same mileage and condition. Whether the car rolled out of the factory in December 2020 versus January 2021 barely matters value-wise.

Of course if MY22 has significant new desirable features, that's a different situation. At this point I don't think we know for sure what changes have been made other than the new Kia logo.

If it turns out MY22 has new features I want, I'll be disappointed I did not wait a few weeks. But right now here in New Jersey there's less than a dozen new Niro EV's available from the approximately 2 dozen dealers we have in the state, and when I bought my MY21 I was not aware the MY22's were starting to arrive.
 
There was also a claim the 2021's were announced only 2 months ago. But dealers had 2021's in stock back in February. And AFAIK the 2022's have not been announced by Kia yet.
 
The 2021 was announced on June 4, 2021. A google search will verify the date.
It took weeks before the KIA corporate site was updated.

I believe that folks are correct in that the differences between the 2020, 2021 and now 2022 Niro EV are minimal.
I took a quick look through the 2021 and 2022 manuals and they appear to be the same, but it was a cursory glance.
Actually my 2021 did not have the April, 2021 SW update and I used the 2020 software (there is no 2021 link) after talking to support - all good.

Compensation was a poor choice of words. Perhaps "recognition" - for PR and good will.
Example: KIA sends a notice recognizing that the the models from 2020-2022 are virtually the same and offers a small voucher ($250?) to be used for their next KIA purchase for anyone who feels badly about how this was handled.
It's often cheap and easy to create goodwill with customers who might be a bit miffed.

I don't expect it, BTW. :)

I recently purchased a Niro EV with an April 2021 build month. Should I be checking to see if it has the April software update, and if yes, how would I do so? Thanks in advance for your help.
 
That link is no good, it lists the latest software for the 2020 EV as

DE20EV.USA.SSW_M.V006.001.210406....

I downloaded and installed .210503.... in June...

I found the only way is to periodically download the files with the web site/app and see what I get.

You are right! Never noticed as I didn’t compare after update. Just looked and I have 210621. I did mine August 8. So that means there were updates in April, May and June?
 
I think so, it's hard to tell exactly what dates they appear, I check the site by downloading every couple of months, trying the download now.

One thing I did notice while looking at the pics. The 2022 has a lane centering button on the right side of the wheel. That's one thing I REALLY wish I had on my '21 :/
 
There were a couple dealers that still had brand new 2019 Niro EVs on their lots as of a couple weeks ago when I was in the market, together with 2020 and 2021. And if they added any 2022 inventory then they would have new cars from 4 model years at the same time, which would be pretty wild.
 
InsideEVs just published a piece about the 2022 Kia Niro EV and apparently the price is going up a bit. Kind of weird, since the price of the Hyundai Kona Electric went down.
Unfortunately, the entry-level trim version is now $900 more expensive ($39,990 compared to $39,090 in 2021 MY):
