User Manuals Delivered with Kona EV

Happy Reading. I have the same Car and Manuals. The problem is they are not clear. First of all they should be in Color not Black & White although many pages are printed in a Light Blue. One of the most confusing things about the manual and on the car itself is whether or not a Button and its corresponding Function are On or Off. I always thought that if you pushed a Button and it had a Light that Came on in the Button, it means it's ON. Evidently in Korea it means OFF. Some Buttons don't even light up, they push inward or pop outward. So which way is ON? In or Out? The book won't help you. Just sitting in the car for an hour or two or more and fiddling with everything is the only way I could figure out most of the Buttons, Icons, and Widgets. Whenever I called Hyundai Customer Service to ask them how to do something they always said "Please hold while I look that up". I had already done that before calling them. And after they kept me on hold for 15 or 20 minutes looking it up they still never found the answer. After about 3 of these phone calls I finally stopped calling them and tried to figure it out myself. Here is an interesting situation I had with them. I live in Southern California and I like Walk Away Door Locks. My manual clearly says on Page 9-11 of the Smaller Kona Electric book (the one that only has 10 sections) "Walk Away Lock" if Equipped. I couldn't find it on my control panel So I call Hyundai. They tell me they need to research it because the car definitely has this feature. 3 days later they call me back and tell me only the European Model of my car has the Walk Away Door Locks. So I'm wondering why my 2017 and 2020 Mazda 3 Vehicles that cost less than 1/2 of my Kona Ultimate costs have the Walk Away Door Locks but my $47,000 Kona EV Ultimate does not have this feature.
In November 2020 I have had the car exactly one year and I figured everything out and I was happy with all my settings. I had my Widgets and My Icons all set the way I wanted them. So what happens next? In December just before Christmas my Electronic System goes haywire. Voice Activation stops working. The System won't hold my Phones Contacts and many other things are not working. Just kept getting a message "Memory Full". I take it to the closest Hyundai Dealer and they tell me It is Too Complicated for them, and I need to take it to another Dealer. I take it to the other Dealer who tests the unit, says it's bad and needs to be replaced. The car is still drivable, just the Infotainment system has to be replaced. A week later they get the new unit in and install it. It looks exactly like my original system that came with the car - on the outside. But when I start to use it everything is different. The Radio is different. The Climate Control System is different and there are no more Widgets. Just Icons. And when I use Voice Recognition to find a location or to call a phone number it now takes about 10 seconds where my original system took 2 or 3 seconds. Now I have Hyundai Corporate involved and they are trying to find me the same system I had. The Dealer says it is just a software issue. But Hyundai thinks otherwise. They are still researching it. At Least I can Drive it. That is a Good Thing. Have a Good Day.

The 2021 Car Infotainment System manual is not any better with references like:
Surround View mirror - "You can check the surroundings by using multiple cameras on the vehicle" and "the system displays both the front view and surround view.
also instructions on checking and setting the rear seat climate status on the system screen
and
Using the passenger talk mode ( as well as Quite mode) in the rear seat
I won't even get into the section on "power trunk or liftgate opening speed and height.
Yes...It does have a blurb about Walk-away Lock as well.
Most include the (if equipped) but not all by a long shot.
Basically a manual that covers just about every feature Hyundai has to offer - on other models.
I am happy I did not enable telematics, the car is the way I bought it and will stay that way (at least until something breaks anyway)

Does anybody have this type of Climate Control on your 2020 Kona EV Ultimate? This was in my Original Infotainment System. The Circle on the Right Side says Auto, but if it were not in Auto in would be the Fan Speed Control that would range from one thru eight if I remember correctly and have the same Orange Color as the Left Side Temperature Circle

When it went bad they replaced it with this unit that looks like a space ship

If you do have my Original Please Take a Photo of the your System Info like the Following so I can show it to Hyundai. They Claim they cannot find a Car anywhere in America that has my Original System as shown in the First Photo. It has been two months and they keep telling me they can't find it. Thanks

With the November "upgrade" you also lose the ability to have 3 widgets on your home screen....

I have and bitterly regret installing the November downgrade. I never saw the useful screen with all the information because apparently it's necessary to press the Climate button to view it. But on my Ultimate that button shows the flying saucer.

Looks like Hyundai is on a corporate campaign to remove functionality from the screen, and to distract drivers by taking up space with art and making the information and controls ever smaller. Are they South Korean or North Korean? #HyundaiBetaTester

I am with you on this and also enjoy the same original software version included with the vehicle. This is one advantage of no OTA updates

Hi DaveO and everyone else who responded to my Post re the Climate Control. Your Photos of the Climate and System Screen are just what I have been looking for and what Hyundai has not been able to find for 2.5 Months. We have a very strong Lemon Law in California and when I was talking to the Hyundai Tech support at the Hyundai Headquarters about getting my old software back I happened to mention that I had a friend that told me I should talk to a Lemon Lawyer here in southern California. It was just a Casual remark. I did not say I was going to call a Lemon Lawyer, just that a friend told me I should. Well the very next day I get a call from a person in the Hyundai Buy Back Dept. I asked her why she was calling me? She said the minute anyone mentions hiring a Lemon Lawyer, my case was taken out of the Electronic Hyundai Engineering department and turned over to the Buy Back Department. It seems the Engineering Dept or any other person you talk to at Hyundai about getting your car fixed including returning my Climate Control Screen, is obligated to call the Buy Back Department which I have since learned is a division of the Hyundai Legal Dept. I assured her that all I wanted was my Original Screen software back but she told me that they are no longer working on that and she would call me the following Monday with an offer to buy my car back. That was in the middle of January. I have not heard from her nor anyone else. I left her about 5 telephone messages and sent her about 5 emails, all of which she has ignored. Under the Calif Lemon Law I would be able to receive my down payment back, plus all the payments I have made plus the attorney - if I had one - would get his attorney fees from Hyundai, not out of the money I get. But I seem to be in a catch 22. I told them I don't want my money back and I don't want another car. I just want my original software back. But they stopped working on that and they have ignored me and I am hanging in limbo. Well that isn't so bad. I'm still driving my car and everything is working, it just is not what I waited 3 months to get after I saw the car at the Southern California Auto Show and test drove it at the dealership including the Climate Control I liked and the Radio I liked, instead of the Space Ship Climate Control I now have. In regard to the Radio on my original software I could read the name of the Singer and the name of the song without my glasses. Now I have to put on my glasses to see it since they made the fonts smaller. I just don't think Hyundai cares about anything except selling their cars. Why do I say this? Because I searched the internet for the Hyundai Executive who I thought might help me. On February 5, 2021 I sent a letter by Fed Ex including Copies of the Pertinent pages of my Original Manual plus Screen Shots of my Original Hyundai Climate Control System - Same as DaveO sent me - Some in Color that I had made at Kinko's, to Mr. John Robb, Director, North American Electronic Systems Development – Hyundai America Technical Center in Michigan. I included my Service Orders from Tustin Hyundai who replaced the original system with the one I hate. Mr. Robb has ignored me. Not even a phone call or an email or a letter telling me he was not the right person to handle this, thinking he would send my documents to the right person. Nope. Nothing. Never heard from him. And when I call the Service department at Tustin Hyundai to see if they have made any progress they tell me my case has been taken over by Hyundai Corporate Headquarters and I will have to contact them. This is what they call a Catch 22. Thanks again for sending the Photos and the Software Numbers. I am going to send them to Tustin Hyundai and Maybe they will retake my case from Hyundai Corporate. I don' know what else to do!!!

With respect to my attempts to find out what is happening with the software, here is the correspondence trail I had with Hyundai Canada, from November 2020 to date.

Their resolution is at the top.... "Call MnSoft"....

If anyone at Hyundai Canada reads these forums, I'm open to any sort of answer! This is nothing but a dodge and weave.

To confirm then, is it correct that Hyundai Canada has not provided direction to MnSoft as to how it wishes to have the head unit software operate in its vehicles?

Or, is it correct that Hyundai Canada allows MnSoft to alter the operation of the head unit software as part of an agreement to maintain the map database in the back end?

Viewing the Hyundai Canada Navigation Update site at https://update.hyundai.com/CA/EN , I see that effective November 23, 2020, there is a new “November 2020 Navigation Map and Software Update”.

The site goes on to say, although not updated for current 2021 Kona EV models, that the updates are applicable to the 2019 and 2020 Kona Electric Model “Standard Gen5W” head unit and updates to the following Nav system, SW version, Map version and Model.

Similarly, the site lists that on August 23, 2020, there is a “August 2020 Navigation Map and Software Update” with this info:

Both of these “SW” and “NAM” updates would appear to be later “Map Versions” than came installed on my new vehicle.

In your response below, you indicate you have spoken with a software engineer who works with map updates and that he indicates that as of yet there no plans to update as I indicated and was curious where I got this information.

Type 1 (My current 3 tile “home” screen)

I assume that this website and available update is, in fact, applicable to Canadian 2021 Kona Electrics. If this is incorrect, please let me know, and if so, where I may obtain the updates.

So, I will ask again my original queries:

When do you plan to let owners revert back to the original, desired screen? If you are not planning to do so, what prompted Hyundai to remove this feature?

If my understanding on this change is incorrect for the Canadian market, and I will be able to retain my current software while still receiving map updates for my Ultimate, please let me know.

If I were to update my maps with this update, and discover that the interface has been altered, can the software be rolled back to the August 23, 2020 (or earlier) version on the Update site to return to the current state?

I find the user interface with a “new” Type 2 home screen utterly useless, as it forces the driver to search through sub-screens looking for the same information currently summarized on a Type 1. This adds to driver distraction, and in my opinion, is a major step backwards in safety and convenience.

Based upon information posted in the EVS forums for updates now rolling out in different markets, I have learned that the next software update, which comes bundled with any future navigation map updates, will remove the ability to view the current 10.25" screen in 3 distinct tiles, as is the case now.

The revised update appears to limit the display to a double wide left widgit area, and a smaller right side widgit .

Why is it that you have removed the ability to show 3 distinct tiles on the home screen, as I currently enjoy (showing radio-map-battery info)? With one glance, I can tell the song title, confirm nearby streets when navigating, and confirm battery state.

When do you plan to let owners revert back to the original, desired screen? If you are not planning to do so, what prompted Hyundai to remove this feature?

They have made the Fonts so small on some items like the song or artist playing on the radio I need to pull over, stop and put on my Glasses to read them. The worst change is going to get people KILLED and Hyundai will wind up as the Primary Defendant since they designed the system, have their name on it and have the deepest pockets $$$$. What am I talking about? The Find Command on the Navigation. You are driving along and you realize you want to go to Costco (for example) so you press the Voice Activation Button on the Steering wheel and say "Find Costco" and 25 locations pop up on your screen and they are numbered 1 thru 25. The font is the size of a pinhead and before you can see it to find the closest one you get a message Which Location do you want or Try Again because you didn't have enough time to read the screen and choose the location. Even when I asked Voice Recognition to Find the Closest Costco, I still get the list of 25 Costco Stores which I cannot see because I don't have a magnifying glass PLUS the system does not allow the list to remain on the screen for longer than about 10 seconds. I haven't timed it, but it's not long. The ultimate result is while I am trying to read the screen and pick a number, I run over a family of four in a crosswalk and kill them all. Or I hit the car in front of me because my eyes are glued to the screen instead of the road. If Hyundai is reading this post, What will Hyundai do about this? My guess is they will disable the Navigation System while driving, and only allow it to work while stopped.

I never had to turn on Climate Control to get the Beautiful Round Circles with The Temperature in One and the Fan Speed in the Other. Just had to Turn the Knob to the Left of the MAP Button for the Temperature and the Knob to the right of the SETUP button for the Fan Speed. I don't remember if turning one would open both. It has been almost six months since my beautiful system with the Circular Controls for the Temperature and Fan Speed were taken away from me by Hyundai.

I had exactly the same thought. The station preselects became tiny, have only the channel number but no longer the name, and have moved from the left to the bottom of the screen which is farther from the driver's sight.

I considered filing a complaint on the NHTSA website about this dangerous condition. If anyone else does that, please post what you said - maybe it'll get me going.

Yup, that's Hyundai. That's why filing a NHTSA complaint might be more useful - it rattles their cage and generates statistics.
