  1. Cool to know I could do the run to Ottawa in winter should the need arise.

We received, in the mail, as recall notice for the brake software.

When I called the local dealership to book the appointment, the chap told me three updates were outstanding.

My wife took the car in this morning and was there for 55 minutes.

Here is a screen shot of what was done (sorry about rotation):

I left the 12 volt battery monitor in place during the service visit:

  4. Glad everything went well, 1 hour is pretty good (minimal wait time).
I assume she didn't stick around for the "complementary car wash/sanitization":)

  5. Too bad the work order is in code. It would be nice to know what work was done and why. I just got the brake recall letter this week too. I'll get it done when I swap tires out in April. And maybe I'll be doing the battery swap-out when I change tires again this coming November?! ;)

When she arrived, she texted me saying that the boys were amazed how clean the car was...so you are right, she didn't stick around for the car wash ;)

Hopefully by then, there will be a foolproof procedure to do a swap in one day without drama.

  9. Hopefully by then the recall will actually exist in Canada!

  10. Navguy12,
After the 3 updates were done, did your head unit home screen change from the type 1 (3 widget) screen to the type 2 (blank) home screen?

I have my brake recall scheduled on Thursday, and they tell me I also have the 2 service campaigns as well, same as yours that were done.

I am not interested in losing my widgets!

  11. Have no fear, Hyundai issued updates installed by the dealer will have no affect on the infotainment system or it's associated software. The dealer techs simply plug in a OBD compliant communications tool and apply the update(s) (usually through a laptop) with the pre-loaded applicable software updates that apply to various computers in the car.
If your infotainment unit is defective and is replaced, obviously the replacement will contain the latest software " version updates" as demonstrated by BaylorBob's post:
    https://insideevsforum.com/community/index.php?threads/user-manuals-delivered-with-kona-ev.7913/page-2#post-123206
Any changes in the related software version (other than unit replacement) is strictly achieved by the update process through MnSOFT and is initiated solely by the owner.

My wife's Kona doesn't have the navigation system in it, so I don't think her data would be applicable to your question.

However, she tells me that there were no observable differences in her vehicle for the trip back home, other than the seat had been moved ;).

The first anniversary since entering service is this Friday, 20 Aug 2021.

I will be doing the 12 month "normal maintenance" this Friday.

My only question (so far): is there a DIY "hack" to de-energize the e-parking brake so that one can service (lubricate the slider pins) the rear brake calipers?

In my TM3, the "hack" is to place the car in "tow mode" (car stays in neutral, even if one opens the door to exit the vehicle) and simply disconnect the 12 volt connection to the rear brake caliper electric motor (e-parking brake).

    Thanks.

  16. I am not aware of an easy hack without the use of a bidirectional capable scanning tool. You could try doing it manually, I found this description on reddit regarding a late model ICE Hyundai, should be the same for the Kona by " removing the parking brake motor from the caliper. There are 2 4mm hex head screws that hold it to the caliper. Once removed use a T40 torx to turn the shaft on the caliper clockwise until it stops. From that point on it’s a standard disk brake job. Remove caliper bracket and the pads, replace/resurface the rotor, new pads, compress the caliper, reassemble everything. Pump up the brakes and then activate the EPB. The motor will whir a bit longer than normal. There is a pretty good video on YouTube. Search Hyundai i40 rear brake replacement."

Anyways I was able to lubricate my calipers pins last year without putting it into service mode or removing the pad

    Thanks for the tips.

I did watch this video and there is one glaring issue with his suggested technique: the first 15 seconds are (the logical) warning to ensure the parking brake is “off” because, in his own words, if the parking brake is left on there is no way (one) will be able to remove the calliper…

I’ll have to get my hands on the assembly on Friday and see just what is required to lube the slider pins.

  18. If you do the work, it would be really nice to see how you did it :)
    (kindly request)

Just don't set the parking brake before attacking the rear caliperas??

Hobbit, you seem to be an excellent DIY'er on your various cars.

Have you tried to simply put the Kona in neutral and then unplug the connector to the e-brake?

I'm able to do this on my TM3 without "setting warning codes" (I just exercise the e-brake about five times after I do this).

When I stop the car, put it in Park, power it down and get out, the EPB never fires. The rear wheels
are still free to spin. I still don't understand the problem. Maybe you have "auto hold" enabled, the
manual says something about automatic application if that's set, printed page 5-30 or so.

Obviously I’m not familiar enough with the setup of my wife’s car.

I had assumed, since I hear the rear ebrakes set each time my wife puts the car in “park”, that, like my TM3, the setting of the ebrakes in the rear is also the actual “park”, versus the Chevy Volt setup where there is an actual parking pawl.

Are you suggesting that the Kona EV has a parking pawl that locks the car in position when “park” is selected?

When the rear end is up on jack’s and the wheels are off, I’ll be able to ascertain if putting the car in park let’s me still free wheel the rear wheels.

According to the owners manual, towing instructions, pages 6-20 to 6-22, if I wish to tow this vehicle in an emergency without wheel dollies, “1. While depressing the brake pedal shift to the N position and turn the vehicle off. The POWER button will be in the ACC position. 2. Release the parking brake.”

I see the “Auto Hold” discussion on pages 5-30 and 5-31, I’ll certainly check that out first.

I just went into the garage and discovered how this car actually gets into park…

My wife always uses the emergency brake when she parks the car…but it is now plain to me that the emergency brake and the parking “brake” are not one and the same on this car.

Thanks for the tip, now I don’t need to worry about disconnecting the e-connection for the rear parking brakes prior to working on the rear callipers…
