Hello Volt owners! Just bought 2017 chevy Volt without charging cable and while I am waiting for the cable I have a question: is it safe to charge the battery (just to be able to move the car around the driveway) using my regular car charger? The engine compartment has the "Plus" terminal near the fuse box which gives me the idea to do so. Is it safe for the battery or charging system of the car? Thank you.
If you make sure not to reverse the connections, you can certainly use a regular battery charger with the 12-Volt battery. In fact, if your Volt is like my Clarity PHEV, you probably can't charge your traction battery if your 12-Volt battery is dead.
Just snooping around the threads of other brands, I saw this question. The plus terminal near the fuse box is for the 12V battery, not the main traction battery. You cannot use that terminal to charge the car, it can only charge the 12V battery.
