Battery Recall for Canadian Kona Owners

It's on the Owners section of the Hyundai Canada website under recalls. They've changed the wording. As for my noise issues: You can hear them on the engine noise thread and read about their progression too.

 

I was just looking at my car in the daylight after having my battery swapped out. There's no doubt that it's a new battery as it's extremely obvious, shiny and possibly hanging down lower than the old one. I don't recall seeing the old one hanging below the running boards so prominently. Anyone else notice differences? Is it just a different (shiny) finish.

*By the way, new battery charges to 358km range at 100%. Identical to the old battery.

 

Wildeyed, I had the same impression. Fortunately I'd taken a measurement of the clearance between the battery and the floor at the B pillar when I first got the car, in order to see if it would clear the sill of the carport (there is a sloping access), and when I measured with the new battery it was within 2mm. I think we are all more curious about our batteries now!

 

It looks like a potbellied pig!

 

See post 220 (mine) on page 11... Followed by an answer by Wildeyed on the very next page, saying that I would get more answers when someone gets their battery replaced. Well, the time has come.

What caught my eye were the black brackets you can see at either end of the battery on your photo. I don't remember seeing those before, or maybe it's the shininess of the new battery that made them stand out more. I was never able to get a clear answer on what changed, but I am sure something changed.

 

I completely forgot about this exchange. I'm on your side. Something about the appearance is different but I'm at a loss to explain what exactly.

John Lumsden above says that it's just a couple millimetres lower so apparently it's all just a cosmetic change and a bit of an illusion.

 

Some news from Hyundai, my new battery was delivered early last week and was installed but due to a lack of coolant on site, the actual handover has been postponed until this Monday. Not sure I'll be able to retrieve it for a few days due to my work schedule, but I'll report if the battery has changed anything in regards to the range (mind you I haven't had the car for 6 months so the cooler temperatures right now might not reveal much to my limited experience.)

 

It's been my understanding that battery replacement packages contain the battery, new bolts and 3 jugs of coolant. But now we've heard of bolts being shipped without a battery and a battery without coolant. It's probably worth checking with your garage before beginning work.

 

My original battery has a strip of black foam-type tape running the length of the side which hides the aluminium finish. At the front end the splash cover is visible overlapping the end of the battery. At the rear there is a black plastic "bracket" of some sort. It seems perhaps the new battery is missing some of those details.

Using the most random readout available on the Kona to judge an implausible change in battery capacity doesn't seem that helpful.

 

I think you're right. My "before" picture shows a nondescript black sided battery "underhang" while the "after" is plain, polished metal.

P.S. my goodness your car is clean!

P.P.S. I was just browsing 2022 inventory on Autotrader and photos clearly show the shiny battery on the new models. I guess all newly manufactured batteries are the same, plain metal.

 

Indeed you are correct; coming from a very unscientific approach, it was more a response to some that have felt there has been diminished range and some that have felt there was an increase. I would certainly not waste anyones time with a km here and there

I'm just happy that we might be getting our car back and will do away with our less than impressive loaner!

 

Since the BMS is contained inside the battery pack and is therefore replaced it certainly seems reasonable that some things may not read exactly the same, at least until some driving data is accumulated. Also, I understood from my dealer last year that there are software updates applied after the pack is replaced. It could be that those are already applied to the newer packs but certainly could mess with range history.

 

Interesting, I didn't realize that the BMS was within the pack itself.

It has been nearly a week with our new battery and so far so good; the car goes forward and backwards when it should! I had them replace the reduction gear oil as a way of mitigating future warranty work as a result of the conversations on this board, I'm not particularly confident with their parts supply these days!

 

Given that we're in April now, the self-imposed deadline for Hyundai to replace outstanding recalled battery packs, I'm just wondering if there is any evidence or anecdotes that support the battery installations happening, accelerating or reaching completion? I suppose it could be happening silently out there in the greater world but talk of replacements on forums appears nonexistent. Are there any forum members here, for example, still awaiting the swap?

 

Here on the other side of the world - in Europe, battery replacements are happening in quite rapid order. Up to few cars per day per dealer having capacity to replace.
Current replacement battery packs seem to have been dated as manufactured in January 2022.
