Whose Telematics Aren't Sold

Sharing a data point, USAA has an app that runs on my iPhone to record driving metrics. They claim to offer discounts as your driving style is analyzed including cell phone and hard braking practices.

WRT Toyota statement that data was provided "anonymously", I don't know how an insurance company can provide a specific rate based on your driving style if the data is truly anonymous.

Well they could at least tell if the general public is driving aggressively, not you specifically, and base the insurance rate on that data.
 
Totally agree. If insurance companies are tailoring rates based on driving data, it’s hard to believe that info is truly anonymous. Seems like they’d need some way to link the data back to individual drivers to make those adjustments.

No, they can just generally apply the data to everyone, no need to single you out unless you option in to a specific program to identify you with the insurance company.


Washington state law requires consent and other states probably do too. So don't think we need to look for monsters under the bed.
