Supercharger location set on fire - Nanaimo

I remember back in 2017 when I visited this "new at the time" 8 stall site while under construction. It was welcome as at the time as there was only one other DC charger operated by former Greenlots downtown.
Sorry to report that now the "vandals" have shown their bad side and set 2 of the stalls on fire and damaged 5 others.
Normally this is a very EV friendly area on the Island.
Not sure if this has anything to do with the latest Tesla (Elon) hate thing going on recently, hopefully this sort of thing doesn't develop further as this is hitting pretty close to home.

"Paterson finds it “odd” that the chargers were targeted, and thinks vandals are misdirecting their anger onto everyday people who own Teslas.

“It’s odd that people target something because of the way they feel. I bought the car for the efficiency, not for a political statement,” he said in an interview.

“Whoever’s vandalizing aren’t vandalizing regular chargers. Like BC Hydro doesn’t seem to have any (damaged chargers) that I’ve seen.”

This is a real shame. Hate to see that kind of stuff in our country. But I guess we have our loonies, too.

I loathe Musk as much as anyone, but this is a terrible tactic that victimizes entirely innocent people and could provoke a backlash.

A Canadian here. While I don't condone this kind of activity and certainly wouldn't engage in it myself I do point out that Musk has made derogatory comments about Canada as a whole. Now one poster has pointed out that the car was bought for efficiency not politics. I in turn am a believer in "dollar democracy" in that sense that every dollar you spend is a "vote" for that companies business practices. If the current abuse of Canada by Trump/Musk continues on let's just say that I wouldn't snitch if I happened to stumble upon Tesla vandals in the act.

And that's the problem. If you make enough people hate you, people will act on those feelings in all sorts of ways. Some may be unwise or counterproductive, but it's going to happen. The stock dropped another 5.34% today, but not everyone has stock they can sell or a vehicle to unload, or at least redecorate with an unflattering bumper sticker.

The ironic thing is that this
1) doesn't hurt musk, it hurts the property owner and insurance company.
2) actually helps musk (they need to buy a new one/replace it)

Things like this should not be tolerated.

I agree with brianc35, none of this hurts Elon Musk. Also, Musk sold and undisclosed amount of Tesla stock on December 31, 2024. The price was about $380 a share then. It is about $235 a share now. Super rich people have the ability to not just take advantage of the market, but also to manipulate the market. Above all, Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg and the rest have no morals in their quest for more money. I think it is possible that Musk is being intentionally odious in order to trigger this kind of behavior and push Tesla's stock lower. Then he will: 1. Buy an "undisclosed" amount of Tesla stock 2. Have a falling out with America's "Dear Leader" and once again embrace the environment. Tesla's stock price will rise and Musk will be richer than ever.

We regular folks are just along for the ride. I did add a sticker to the back window of my Tesla Y. "I Bought This Before We Knew Elon was Crazy!"

Have a falling out with America's "Dear Leader"
I agree with the outcome, a "falling out" but it will be the sociopath in Chief who chooses the time, reason, and methodology. As for Musk returning to his pre-Twitter state, I doubt it.

Unfortunately, bad people will do bad things. And when encouraged, they will be emboldened to do even more. If we believe in democracy, let's exercise our opinion at the ballot box, and not resort to violence if the outcome is not to our liking.

I don't think Trump or Elon believe in democracy. However, damaging Tesla Superchargers just hurts innocent folks, and I believe arson is a more serious crime then vandalism. So folks, just stop this!

I know its hard for people to hold back on their political views, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. This includes both sides claiming threats to democracy, whether before the election and after. But the fact is that Trump won the election this round and he is doing what he campaigned on incl using Musk with DOGE. And since the election his approval rating is the highest ever while the Dems is actually the lowest ever (or in recent memory). So that kind of indicates where the majority of people stand at this time.

What is really bad, though, with politics, is that some will indeed advocate violence when they don't get their way and there are enough nutcases around that will act on it. That is what has been happening with Tesla and Musk. Case in point, a Congress person (Crockett) actually said the other day that she wants "Elon Musk to be taken down" on her birthday, Mar 29. She later walked that back claiming free speech. This type of rhetoric has to stop.

Bottom line there is no justification for violence of this kind, and those who refuse to condemn it and even advocate it should also be held accountable for what is happening. I am personally not a fan of Tesla, for other reasons, but also condemn any violence incl such words against the company or Musk.

The other day, someone threw a rock through the windshield of a Tesla in Vancouver injuring a pregnant woman.

My son and his wife are now afraid to take his Tesla to downtown Vancouver for fear of vandalism. A lot of kooks there. Yesterday, they had a dinner date with friends there, and he decided to drive his big Ford Lightning instead, which is not easy to park in underground lots.

Who would have ever thought it would come to this??!!

Owch!

In the USA, I am more worried about bullets but we also have rock throwers. I used Google street view and other than one light-rail overpass, nothing stuck out. I wonder if it was thrown from another vehicle?

Your son's family is exercising good judgement. We each have to assess our risks.

UPDATE:

The distribution of glass fragments on the driver side suggests the rock was thrown from the passenger side of the car.
