Expecting delivery of Audi ETron sometime early August. Just got off the production line. Anyone have any thoughts on EV charging units for home installation. I believe Audi gives you a station with the vehicle, but a second station would be super helpful at my inlaws house - any thoughts differences on JuiceBox / ChargePoint Home or Clipper Creek?
 
Seems your etron will be able to draw 9.6 kW. Just about any EVSE that can draw 40 amps at 240 volts will be fine. In case you are not aware EVSEs are really just fancy safety smart cords and the actual charger is in your car. Some EVSEs like the juicebox have wifi app controls but they still are just a fancy cord with relays and circuit board attached to prevent you from electrocuting yourself. Just make sure your home and the inlaws have dedicated 50 amp circuits and NEMA 14-50 outlets to whatever EVSE your choose and you should be golden.

That's kind of what I heard / figured... any thoughts on the "smart cords" themselves, or they are all pretty much the same... esp at the inlays I could give or take wifi, doesn't matter, that's only once a month trip for the weekend.

No opinion on a brand as, sadly, I don't own one.

But you are advised to hire a licensed electrician to check out the wiring and do the installation. And do make sure it's a licensed electrician; many who hire out as an electrician are not licensed.

And sadly, prices vary widely on this sort of installation. If the electrician wants to charge more than $300-400, then get a second and/or third estimate before you have it done. We've seen reports of charging $1000 or more, which is ridiculous even if the electrician has to run a new circuit out from the breaker box.

A reasonable fee for installation will be well worth the money spent to ensure there's no fire hazard from charging. Think of it as fire insurance that you only have to pay once!

In many jurisdictions a home owner can do the work if they pull a permit. Ultimately the work gets inspected. It's not exactly rocket science but if you feel uncomfortable around electricity by all means hire a pro. As far as cost it really depends on how much labor is involved. It took me around 6 hours (and I know what I am doing)to install my new circuit with new sub panel, having to go through concrete and finished spaces, I fully expected that if I hired an electrician this would have been an easy $800+ bill. Its really too hard to generalize on cost, it depends greatly on your individual circumstances.
