There is a link to the 18 page, NHTSA letter in the article. I'll look at it later. The first 8 pages sounded familar to what I've seen on the most recent FSD.

Last month, NHTSA announced that it was opening a new investigation into Autopilot/FSD after not being satisfied with the recall that came out of its previous investigation closed last year.
The agency said that several more crashes had been reported since the recall and is now questioning the “remedy,” which was an increase in alerts drivers get when using Autopilot.
Now, NHTSA says that “post-remedy crash events and results from preliminary NHTSA tests of remedied vehicles” is pushing them to revisit the situation.
Today, the agency released a new letter it sent to Tesla in which it requests extensive information about Autopilot/FSD. NHTSA is basically asking for all data and document that Tesla has related to these systems.

Full Self Driving drove for 99% of the 717 miles except for a brief time I drove to the gas station. Sad to say, USAA claimed I was 90% responsible. So I'm disputing this with:

I'll check under the bumper cover but it will be easy to pop it back on.
Just another case where FSD was better than the humans.

- Red circle is where his front bumper hit my right rear bumper cover

I speculation on why others do things I wouldn't (or did not) is not high on my priorities. I'm more interested in problems closer to home . . . me.
I'm 74 and continue to grow older. The twinges of arthritis reduce my flexibility. Eyesight is not as sharp as 20 years ago and reaction times are slower. So if computers and software can handle the margins of my abilities, GOOD!
Full Self Driving and AutoPilot is safer for me another everyone else on the road.

Tesla crash stats are not looking good. While the car itself may be crash worthy, its FSD is not helping to reduce crashes. It can provide a false sense of security and reduce driver situational awareness. And I have always thought that centre console, and no HUD is a bad idea. When I drive with my son in his M3, he is poking at that thing pretty well every 5 min, which means his eyes are off the road. And this article seems to imply that driver distraction is a major contributor to more crashes. This makes perfect sense to me.

About FSD, there has been a significant improvement since November. Still a work in progress, I’m happy with the progress. Far from a failure as of last evening when I drove it around town.
I have hands on driving with Toyota’s 2017, TSS-P. That was so bad I traded that car in for my Tesla and paid an extra $1,200 for Autopilot.
As for competition to FSD, geofencing is a big fail for me. My cars work for me where I want to go.
