One pedal driving - car still rolling forward?

Has anyone noticed that the SE still rolls forward if you take your foot off the brake? This happened to me while in gridlock traffic and also while at a stop light. I'm trying to drive with a single pedal but it seems like the car still requires the brake to be pressed at a stop, which is quite different than a Tesla.

It does however seem to hold the car from rolling backwards.

As the manual explains, your SE won't roll forward when you select Reverse gear and won't roll backward when you select Drive.

It's anyone's guess why MINI didn't make the motor hold the SE stationary whenever you've brought the car to a complete stop.

Don't forget that when you're stopped without using the brakes, the brake lights are not illuminated. That may fool a driver behind you.

Thank you! I guess I should read the manual.
 
I've said it on here before, but the fact that it doesn't keep you from rolling forward seems like a saftey hazard in my eyes. You stop by using regen braking, therefore never using the brake pedal. Then all the sudden you notice you're rolling forward into the car in front of you. This is one item in particular Tesla did right. You stop and actually hold without a brake pedal. End of story.
 
Again, my experience is that the car keeps rolling forward when you're on a downslope. If you're on level ground or an uphill slope, the car doesn't move. Not a hazard!

If only there were some way to stop the car from rolling. Maybe foot operated so you didn't have to take your hands off the wheel.

Oh well I guess not, what a totally unsafe car.
 
I feel like the MINI is pretty controlled and the drivetrain is logical. Speaking of safety, the VW EVs will roll freely in any direction, regardless of selected gear. This almost caused me to wreck my e-tron on multiple occasions. That much size and weight combined with free rolling without resistance is just a bad idea. Try driving one of those in hilly areas if you think the MINI is bad!

I am more concerned with the fact that the brake light goes out after the regen system brings you to a stop. But both issues are easily resolved (and become a habit quickly) by just pushing the brake pedal when you come to a stop.

Point is, if you're expected to be at a complete stop you should be. A ever so slight roll forward can go unnoticed pretty easily...

Fair point here. When you come to a stop on a slight incline and the car auto holds you using the brake logic, are the brake lights on? If so it would seem like this is all a pretty easy solution if the car would just hold you at a stop regardless of slope in the road.
 
This is a kerfuffle about nothing. I can't believe that people who own Mini's want the car to do everything. There's no fun in that! If you can't notice that your car is moving, please don't be on the road with other drivers. Unsafe at any speed! <shakes head in disbelief>
 
I think most people that are complaining about this, including myself, have come from driving Teslas. I'm used to the Mini now especially after knowing that it's supposed to work that way, just surprised initially.

Thinking back, I remember being a little surprised too after buying the SE. Tesla released their one pedal driving some time in 2019 or 2020. As long as you don't overshoot your stop (drive too fast, requiring use of the brake pedal) it would engage the brake automatically at stops. Very seamless and impressive integration IMO.

Interesting, I didn't know that Tesla introduced it so late. I think Nissan had it on their leaf since 2010 or so.

Nissan only introduced it in the second gen Leaf, about 2019. BMW had it in the original Mini-E and the Active-E that followed (both lease-only pilot programs).

Chevy had it on the Bolt from the beginning in 2016, and there was a certain silly pride that Bolt owners took in having it when Tesla did not. That pride was quickly washed away when Tesla rolled it out via a software update to all cars. As a Bolt owner myself at that time I found the whole situation kind of silly. But I wouldn’t want a car without one-pedal driving.

Agreed. Definitely something I feel Tesla does better...Certainly other aspects of the MINI I like more though!
