New cars.com review for Clarity PHEV

I really like that review. It is honest and didn't waste a lot of my time walking around talking about the looks of the car which is usually subjective. I think he did a good job.

I disagree with his position on the regen paddles. I like the way they work.

The reviewer is just too used to paddles being used to shift the transmission to fully appreciate the Clarity's regen paddle implementation. Of course, he's right on when saying that the regen selection should stick in ECON Mode (and the hidden NORMAL Mode) just like it does in SPORT Mode.

His only fact-check moment came when he said that the battery's "in the rear." True, the battery is to the rear of the front edge of the front seats, but he implied it's at the rear of the car, instead of under the seats and rear-seat floor. The Clarity PHEV's battery arrangement is much more elegant than the interior-raising slab of batteries found in other cars with sizable batteries.

I do too, and I get the reasoning. In sport mode I'd except more sudden accelerating and decelerating (paddles remembering selection) for cornering and such, while in "econ" and other modes you really don't want to regen much at all since that means you are slowing down constantly instead of being able to "coast" to a stop. More decelerating = more acceleration needed and accelerating takes more energy than you gain from the regen.

My 2c on why I think they made sport mode remember and not econ and other modes.

I only really use mine when yielding or coming up to a stop sign / red light so having them forget means I can take my foot off the gas w/o a huge slow down from 3-4 chevrons constantly.
 
I don't think this review has been posted here yet. It's from CarBuzz, posted about a month ago. It's also positive on Clarity PHEV.

 
I just realized there are two different threads on this.

I noticed the first thing he mentioned was a problem cooling with his level 1 while parked in the heat and that a level 2 charger worked w/o issue.

I mentioned in the other one also having an issue with outside pre-conditioning with the level 1 charger. I let it run for 30 minutes @ ~8:00am and it only went from 45-59f, I started it again for another 20 min and it was up to 72f.

So it def takes a lot of time and energy to first heat it up which is likely why people are having some big range losses now that its winter time.
