Need some help from the gurus...

My car sadly had a mishap about a month ago. I finally got it back yesterday. It seems that someone at some point damaged the leather on the steering wheel (it was perfect when it went in).

Any thoughts or parts diagrams on how it can be repaired? I will add photos a little later today.

Thank you. I looked at the steering wheel last night and it looks like the whole cover is stitched on. Will they have to sew the new one on? I can't fathom how they could ever make it look like factory when sewing it by hand. I'm afraid this is going to turn into a big mess.

Unfortunately the spot where the leather is chewed is right where I put my left hand, which leads me to believe that someone probably had a tool or a rasp or something in their hand when they moved my car at some point.
 
Yes, leather covers are hand stitched on. And it will take someone with experience to get it right. Perhaps the body shop where you had the other work done has a specialist on that? And maybe for free because they did the damage?
 
Oh yes, I brought it to their attention and they are sorting out the correction and it's their responsibility. I just want to be armed with some knowledge of how it will be fixed so that I can insist it is done properly. They have been in contact with Honda and will have an answer for me by Tuesday. In my mind, I just can't see how you could make it look like new without having some expertise, I know I couldn't hand-stitch one of these covers without it looking like a 2-yr old did it! LOL!
 
They may just replace the entire steering wheel assembly.

At the end of the day, you don’t care how they fix it, just that it is back to looking like new. The rest is for them to worry about.

This happened to me on my Lexus IS250 when the windshield was replaced. Came back to the same exact damage as here. It is almost as if they attached a jig to the steering wheel to help aid the installation of the screen in my case. Using leather conditioner I was able to relax/soften the leather enough to make it almost go away. Yours was worse than mine though. After that experience, I take photos of the wheels, the exterior and seats before any work is done. I should add steering wheel to the list.
 
My husband thinks it looks like the pattern a knurled handle would make, so he figures a technician probably had a tool with a knurled handle in his hand while turning the steering wheel, or perhaps pulling the car in or out of the bay. :(

 
So apparently they are replacing the whole steering wheel. The controls and centre airbag hub are apparently separate parts and the existing ones will be switched to the new steering wheel on Saturday or next week. I will post an update once this is done.
