Mechanical “clunk” noise when turning in either direction

Hey all,
I posted this previously in another topic but it’s gotten somewhat serious so I figured I’d start a new topic.

About a month ago I started noticing a mechanical sounding clunk noise when I’d turn the wheel and reverse out of my driveway. Didn’t think anything of it at first.

Over the last few weeks I started noticing it when turning left or right onto another street, for example.

I took it into Hyundai last week where they had it for about 4 hours. They deemed it was the front left control arm. They ordered a new one and I had a family member take my car in today to have the part installed so I wouldn’t need to take a day off work.

After another 4 or so hours, they called me saying the new control arm was installed but the car was still making the same sound. The tech working on it was unable to locate the source. They told me that they sent out a “special notice” to Hyundai engineering as all of their staff were unable to figure out the source of the issue.

They told me they would let me know as soon as they heard back from Hyundai what the problem might be.

I’ll keep the group updated in case anyone has a similar issue. This should at least cut down on any future diagnostic time for anyone else!

Thanks for that info, look forward to the solution.
BTW just what we needed, another noise related issue:eek:

Hey guys,
So, quick update here. As stated, when I last took my car in they replaced the control arm believing that it was the cause of the noise. It was not.
They called me Friday evening to let me know that they are "bringing in" a specialist Engineer from Hyundai. I don't know if this means there's someone specifically coming from Korea to examine the issue, but that's what it sounded like to me. This person is set to arrive on Tuesday and they have requested my car for the whole day.

My personal "complete guess" take on this is that I believe they think it may be a potential safety issue and are not taking any chances. A recall may arise from this as by the sounds of it - it's affecting a decent amount of people. @Vanryan I'd be interested in hearing what your dealer comes up with. Perhaps it may be worth showing them this thread or having them call my dealer. I'd hate to have them waste your time with the same troubleshooting that I went through. If you're interested. My dealership is Burlington Hyundai located at 2016 Plains Rd E Burlington, Ontario.

Will keep you posted on what happens tomorrow!

So another update as I sit in the waiting lounge.
The specialist has deemed it to likely be a bearing issue. They've ordered a complete bearing assembly and will call me when it's in.
We'll see if that fixes the issue.

Also, see the "high pitched noise" thread for an update on that as well!

Wheel bearing or does the EV traction motor have a shaft bearing like in Tesla drive units that not uncommonly fail after about 60,000( at least in the early model S) ??

They simply told me it was the entire "wheel bearing assembly". My car has about 20,000 KM on it to date. Seems a little early for parts to be breaking unless I unknowingly hit a massive pot hole!

I actually was looking on another Hyundai forum where the wheel bearing was the case for a few , hope it works!

I'm getting the same noises when turning and the high pitch motor noise so please update us if actually fixes the problems so I can get my dealership to use the same solutions.

So it was raining when I brought the car in and I am not sure if that is what prevented the "clicking" from happening but I couldn't reproduce it at the dealer. They also took it for a drive and couldn't hear anything. They said to bring it back if it happened again. I'll try to see if I can get my wife to record it as I pull out of my garage as that seems to be when it happens.

I did notice that because it was raining yesterday that the clunking was less but still there. Since it's sunny today I'll see if it's back to normal clunking again.

The clicking is definitely more noticeable when it is dry and sunny. So don't bring it to the dealership on a rainy day.

In my case at least, I only notice it when my windows are down. But it's extremely noticeable if you're driving around with your windows down. Any time I pull into a parking lot, parking spot, street - you can hear it. They seemed to have no trouble finding mine. I hope the wheel bearing resolves the issue as @electriceddy stated!

So I was able to capture the clicking sound on video. The car has been in the dealership for 2 days as they try to sort through what the issue is. They are able to reproduce the issue now so hopefully they can get it figured out tomorrow.

.

That sounds louder than mine - I only notice it on large steering movements at low speeds - I keep meaning to go to a car park and see if I can find a repeatable set of moves to make it happen. Only really noticeable when the window is open and not obviously getting worse ( I've done about 1500 miles after the 2000-odd when I bought it

This is exactly what I have.
They initially thought it was the front left control arm - replaced it and it did no fix the issue. They currently have the front left bearing assembly on order. Should be in by the end of the month! Will let you know if this resolves the issue.
