Lane Keep Assist warning

When using the Lane keep assist on the highway a warning flashes on the dash every minute that steering is required. If you do not "wiggle" the wheel a little the LKA will shut off. This was on a dead straight road. After about 30 minutes this got pretty annoying.

I understand its for safety for the driver to stay actively involved but come on Honda. Its not like I am going to set it and start playing chess. Does anyone have hack\trick\tip that may help mitigate the annoyance of having to apply steering input every minute?
 
I think something like this happens with most, if not all, of the other manufacturer's lane keep assist features. It is not just a Honda thing, it's a "lots of drivers are idiots thing so we are forced to do this" thing.
 
It makes the feature almost useless to me. If I have to mess with the wheel every minute I might as well just steer. Jeez!
 
I tried it but it doesn't seem to work well enough for me to trust it. It works fine on straight, well painted roads in good weather. It seems to have some difficulty where the road suddenly curves and a mistake can be fatal. I do like the lane departure warning though. There's been many times where that little wriggle on the steering wheel has reminded me to pay better attention at the right time. Where I found these features particularly valuable is during dusk and the sun is shining in my eyes, making the road and other cars difficult to see (also increasing the risk of surrounding drivers making mistakes). This feature along with the forward collision warning and collision mitigation braking can save your life. I found the latter two features to work incredibly well, maybe because they also use radar to supplement the camera.
 
They have to assume that you're going to play chess because, inevitably, someone will.
You aren't planning to steer while you drive the car?
 
I've turned off all of the supposed "safety" features. Adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and collision mitigation braking warning, and I never use the lane keeping asisstance system . It irritates me that the collision mitigation braking warning resets every time you turn the car off.

All of those systems are nothing but an irritant to me. Especially the collision braking mitigation system. When active, it slams on the brakes at times when it is completely unnecessary.

Autopilots are for airplanes, not cars.

In what situations has the braking system slammed the brakes unnecessarily? I've never had the brakes come on, only the warning signal, and that has spared me from fender benders once or twice already.

Can you explain a little more? I use the LKA every now and then and have been able to go longer distances with my fingers lightly resting on the steering wheel. Only occasionally have I seen the "steering is required" notice.

But, I agree with @PHEV Newbie that it only works on well lit, clearly marked, and straight roads. If the curve on the road is not a gently sloping curve, the LKA cannot keep up and almost drives you off the road. That's good enough reason for me to keep my hands on the wheel.
 
The system that is currently in our car is at most an SAE level 2 system (the driving mode-specific execution by one or more driver assistance systems of both steering and acceleration/decelerationusing information about the driving environment and with the expectation that the human driver perform all remaining aspects of the dynamic driving task) and according to this article, only one car manufacture has broken the level 3 barrier (Audi).
 
Brady, you must have much steadier hands than I have because with normal /minimal steering inputs my LKAS is not alarming at all; just giving gentle corrections (most of the time). If you take your hands off then it will alarm. As Mckersive points out, it’s not a self steering vehicle.
 
I am taking our Clarity on its first real road trip this coming weekend and I look forward to testing out as many of the self-driving features as much as I can. Well, everything except for the collision mitigation system, hopefully.
 
Remember these are not self driving features. They help to reduce fatigue they do not replace you. I have twice now had CMBS step in when a car in front of me was turning I knew it and I was hovering the brake coasting waiting for it to clear the path of my vehicle and I get a medium tap of the brakes. I take this as a reminder not to be an *** and give people more room :).

Exactly. With the Honda, driving with it some last night, I wouldn't really trust it hands free. It is definitely designed to help you not miss a turn and it seems to work better when there is resistance from your hands. It also will suddenly turn off if the lines disappear, so you really need to pay attention. A hands free system needs to have detailed maps, know precisely where you are on the road using various sensors, etc.

I think the opposite will happen with autonomy, forced tailgate mode for improved efficiency of the "train" of cars that could be made to travel higher speed on the freeway ;)

Probably once car to car communication is available. Still leaves little room for failure
 
Someone above asked when the car might slam on the brakes unintentionally. I've had it happen only once over the last 2,000 miles since I bought the car. Pulling into my driveway at what I would consider "normal" speed it sensed my other car ahead (I park nose to tail in the driveway) and locked the brakes up as I approached. It hit the brakes when I was a few feet away and the car screeched to a halt, but since I do this every day and it's only happened once, I consider this an anomaly.

It does commonly flash BRAKE in the IP when I am approaching a car that is turning ahead of me and i can tell it is moving out of the way, but the car doesn't. It's never hit the brakes on its own in these circumstances but I do see the warning pop up a few times a week.

This is usually when it hits the brakes on me...
Had it tap them on me again yesterday lol... such is life...
 
I have also noticed the flashing BRAKE when cars in the opposite lane are rounding even a slight curve and must appear to the sensors as if they are in my lane. Is a bit unnerving, but so far no actual braking. I am driving on the same roads and have not noticed this before. Just in the past couple of weeks.
 
Our Kia Niro’s ACC does this in a few places around DFW and it gets a bit annoying, but it actually slows the car down. I was using it quite a bit for a while but stopped as it’s too aggressive on the throttle. Even Honda’s is too throttle happy at times so I’ve been avoiding it as well.
