So if we buy an EV today (which I would like to do) unfortunately resale value within a year can be 30% lower than msrp. And as technology marches forward what might have been the best range in 2023 may hardly qualify as mid range in 2027. If any EV sale had a promise of one free (or set charge) battery upgrade (even with their new tech) within the manufacturer warranty - that's a company that understands what is partially behind slow EV sales. If the public knew there was a company that had their current product merging with a future timeline this might also change what a buyer would be willing to pay for an older vehicle (just saying..)
 
I think the fixation on BEV range is driven largely by the under-developed charging infrastructure, and drivers' lack of familiarity with how EVs should be charged. I know someone who got their first BEV, and they are overly focused on DCFC charging, thinking they need to "gas up" in a short time frame, like going to a fueling station. It will take some re-education of the driving public to integrate EV charging into routine driving, such as taking advantage of time spent in restaurants or grocery stores that have convenient charging.

I do find it unusual to expect the range of existing EVs to get upgraded. Do ICE cars get the option for bigger gas tanks when newer models come out with higher fuel economy? It is, in fact, standard to trade in your ICE car for different fuel economy or range or live with what you have.
 
It is unlikely that a US car manufacturer will figure out the marketing benefit that an upgrade option might provide to sales (mentioned in first post). No comparison is needed against ICE here as it is only a hope that an upgrade tactic would make a US market more competitive (until cheaper materials can be used that are not sourced out of foreign countries..)
Our ICE technology for range expansion is simple- traverse the Australian outback and you will find the additional range in gas cans strapped or contained in all manner to vehicles in transit. Yes - EVs can do something similar with a multitude of solar cells - but different environments become more challenging here for an EV..
I can see the point of re-education regarding charging but I hate the thought of cold weather de-rating a battery to greater than a 40% mark - and would love to see that change. But yes, a long distance drive in an EV in our sub zero climate with the family has to hit the same anxiety as the range provided by a Chevy/Spark (same anxiety - just a different level of options are currently available).
