This seems like almost a dumb question but I really don’t know the answer.

For the US federal EVSE tax credit, can I buy an EVSE every year? I bought one this year and plan to file for the credit. But say I want a portable one next year, could I do that and get the credit again?

You can take the tax credit every year, and can buy multiple EVSEs in a single year but your 30% credit is capped at $1K.
Right now, you cannot get a tax credit for an EVSE purchased next year as the current incentive expires at the end of the year. Congress may or may not extend it or come up with a different incentive.

I’d forgotten that it’s currently set to expire at the end of the year. Good point!

This brings an interesting question to my mind. Do you need to own a EV to put up a charging station to get the credit for a home. Let us say I want to buy a EV but not this year, but would rather put something generic enough so that I can buy a car next year. Again, hypothetical,. but would that work?

No requirement to own an EV
