Today I saw something new in our SE. I got a warning message on the instrument cluster warning of debris in the road one mile ahead. The center display switched from Apple maps to the Mini map and indicated the position of the debris. I’m not sure how it knew this. Maybe another Mini or BMW ahead of us saw it with the camera and reported it? Not sure, but it was interesting. In almost 10,000 miles this is the first I’ve seen this warning.

Ironically, the opposing traffic on the other side of the freeway was really backed up. My side was completely open. I suspect the debris was on the opposite side.

I have a ‘22 Signature.

I've gotten the debris warning a number of times in my 2021 Iconic. I figured it's part of the Real Time Traffic Info (RTTI), which I thought was only Navigation Package Plus (see post on this) which Signature supposedly didn't get.

Signatures have real time traffic (RTTI). Mine shows delays, traffic, etc. This is the first I’ve seen this warning and I was impressed it switched from Apple Maps when it anticipated an issue.

I have no idea what the plus in the Navigation package is, but the base package is very comprehensive. I could not figure that out when ordering, and still don’t know.

i also have weather, news, concierge and all the other connected services as well.

2022 signature is warning me with red display about dangerous road conditions like 1mile ahead and I program nothing in my SE and the worse display in yellow speed warning every few yards above 25 miles /hr all the time and I don’t know how to eliminate that useless warning .

10,000 miles of driving my Iconic '22, and just this week was the first time I received the warning about debris in the road. And I never did see any debris.

2023 SE Signature here. Display flipped from Apple Maps to the native Mini OS with a warning about narrow lanes due to stationary vehicle on the freeway ahead. Traffic did slow but I never saw the stopped vehicle. I was impressed by the implementation.

It is truly mind boggling how the residual effects can remain for hours after the offending vehicle has been cleared, if the traffic remains thick enough.

I hope that self-driving cars in the future can help with this. A lot of it is human nature - namely impatience and greed. A wholistic look at traffic patterns often reveals a simple solution but it requires somewhat altruistic behavior across all of the drivers involved. The minute one driver tries to take advantage of the situation to get a little farther than the next you, it all falls apart.
