ChargePoint Makes a Cut-Proof Cable to Deter Thieves

This Autoweek article describes the steps ChargePoint is taking to stem the rash of charging-cable thefts from unattended charging stations. With the theft of expensive copper wiring being rampant, I'm surprised permanently attached charging cables became the standard in North America.

Will we soon have to carry our own charging cables, like European EV drivers must do? Is wireless EV charging, with its attendant vehicle-weight and charging-efficiency penalties the only long-term solution (especially for those with physical challenges)?

I appreciate the European approach of just a plug on a pole and bring your own cable and connector.

IF the open charger I maintain suffers a cable theft, I would leave the NEMA 14-50 outlet. Prossibly replacing the socket with a heavy duty one.

The sad thing is once you cut it all up it's hardly worth any money. There is no great copper value. NACS/J1772 cable is ~$200 from openevse. The big fat stuff on the DCFC's are twice that, and useless once you cut it. Just stupid, and I also like the idea of 'Bring your own cable'. I think it's a great idea, and will probably become common, with storage in the frunk.
