Owner of a BMW i3-REx, the first time I saw a BMW i8, I laughed. What a mistake and that was their follow-up?

Take a BMW i3-REx and tune the engine for efficiency and it would be an awesome, plug-in hybrid. Then move the architecture into their other cars and they'd have significantly improved their sales. So what is their top seller:
  • 2019 BMW 5 Series530e iPerformance Plug-In HybridSpecs
  • Engine. 2.0 L Intercooled Turbo Gas/Electric I-4.
  • Horsepower. 248 @ 4000 RPM.
  • Torque. 310 RPM.
  • Drivetrain. Rear Wheel Drive.
  • Transmission. 8 speed Automatic w/OD.
  • Battery Range. 16 mi.
  • Fuel Tank Capacity, Approx. 12.1 gal.
. . .

This is silly.

Agreed. My household is a HUGE BMW house....we've had four in the last 20 years. I personally test drove their first test EV prior to the release of the i3 about 10 years ago. But their overly cautious approach to EVs have been baffling especially after the explosion of interest in Teslas. I live minutes away from their US headquarters so I KNOW they can see the sheer number of potential EV shoppers in our area alone that picked Tesla over i3. I would have gladly bought a BMW EV but wound up with a competitor car instead.

Here's to hoping BMW gets their act together when I reenter the car market again in a few years.
