Again although it was using ENET on iOS, nothing special, and no specific sequence of steps, was necessary to access and code the headunit ECU.

Maybe send a support request to the app developer?

Wow, I guess I didn't notice the settings options in the app called "Ignore Headunit" which was checked. Why would that even be an option? And why would that be in the settings menu in the app? I guess it was on by default. I didn't know to check the app settings. Well I guess this might be helpful for anyone else with the same problem. Make sure the option for "Ignore Headunit" is unchecked.

I have been using a Veepeak OBDCheck BLE bluetooth adapter with both mi3 and ABRP successfully.

In fact, I have been using it with ABRP often enough that I recently installed an OBD cable with an on/off switch so I don't have to worry about removing and reinstalling the adapter for battery drain or security concerns:

Resurrecting this to provide an update. Not mentioned in my rationale above is that I also noticed that, if left plugged in/turned on, it seemed like that adapter would block or prevent my SE from "phoning home", so I would miss status updates (especially bothersome for Tronity).

While reading a discussion about BLE OBDII adapters in another EV forum, there were comments about Veepeak being a little unreliable and recommendations that the OBDLink CX was a much better option. And they pointed out that A Better Routeplanner also recommends the OBDLink CX and specifically recommends to NOT use the Veepeak (https://www.iternio.com/abrp-obd) due to feedback from their users. I have also had occasional problems where ABRP would show very wrong values for my SE's state of charge; sometimes 65535% (!!!), sometimes 0%, or some other value that is very different than what the instrument cluster shows. A bogus state of charge really defeats the purpose of using ABRP.

I have since switched to the OBDLink CX, and I'm pleased to report that all those problems have been eliminated (so far, with about a month's worth of use). I don't even need to use the OBD cable with on/off switch, as my SE reliably "phones home" as it should with this adapter plugged in and the window for BLE pairing is limited. It's more expensive than the Veepeak, but this seems to be a case of "you get what you pay for".

I use the OBDLink CX as well and it is rock solid. The price, however has shot up significantly since 2021 as it used to be around $39.95.

I use the Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth 4.0 and I’ve never had a connection issue with mi3 or Bimmercode, as far as I can remember.

honestly the Enet cable is the best option. it ends up costing around the same and it codes things in literally 30 seconds vs the 5 minutes it takes on the Bluetooth ones. and I've never had it error out like i did on the veepeak

i got the Ethernet one listed directly by beemercode

I also like ENet for coding, but OBDLink for everything else. They are a great company, the only one who cares about security - most OBD dongles are wide open all the time and for something like a BMW/MINI means someone may code your car while it is still receiving power. You should always unplug when not in use but I know many people don't.

On that front MX+ has an explicit pairing button requiring physical access, CX prefers known devices but locks out if that device isn't around ~5 minutes after power on. Also, years ago I was developing a third party app for their products. They sent me all the technical docs and free hardware without asking. Very open and generous company.

Can you delete the center display ring lighting with bimmercode. Are there other ways to turn it off. I am going to be leasing an se (bmw is now leasing the se)and I find that ring annoying.

I believe you can turn it off from the in car settings.

not sure why you hate it, I have it setup to show me how much battery I have. I think it's a neat feature

That’s the first I’ve heard of that setting, how did you do that?

You can control how the light ring behaves without using Bimmercode, but I don't recall whether state of charge is a built-in (non-hidden) option.

I have mine set to match the driving mode, so it turns red in Sport mode. I like to point new riders towards the oh sh*t handle, flip into Sport mode, and floor the accelerator, and the color adds to the effect. ;)
