Battery Charging Module

Hi. My 2018 Clarity 184k miles, (my daughter uses) got an error charging “Plug in Charging System Problem - Range Limited”. Would not charge on three chargers I tried. I read it might be the 12v battery so I replaced it. Still same issue.

Took to Honda. They tell me it’s the “Battery Charging Module” and repair would be $5500. No thanks.

Any idea what I can do? My Plug in Hybrid is now just a Hybrid.

At this point, unless you want to do it yourself or find a mechanic willing to work on it, you probably would be better off getting a different car.
 
The battery charger is $2600 from Honda, battery pack is $4800 and the battery charge control module is $670. These prices come from hondapartsnow.com

@StickWare, It's nice to hear from one of our longest (and most experienced) members! And your car is still kicking (sort of) at 184K miles!

My opinion would be to get a quote from a local mechanic who would entertain doing this job, and purchase the ~$200 used part from eBay.
Cross your fingers that it has been properly diagnosed by Honda. This should be a LOT less than what Honda told you.

Let me also suggest something else before diving into this repair. Do a very close examination of the charge port on the vehicle. Use a flashlight and look carefully at all of the pins to make sure none are damaged in any way. Repeated use of any connector can result in damaged pins. Sometimes a pin will become recessed (compare the depth of all pins to the others). There is some chance that the connector is really at fault and that would be a lot simpler than replacing the "battery charge module".

Yeah, not sure helpful to confirm your description but I had the same problem at 60K miles. Car would not charge at several chargers. I also replace the 12v battery in hopes it would be that simple. No gotty. In my case I had the extended warranty and the dealer replaced the charger at no cost to me. They claimed the VSC was billed $4700 for the part and install. Like others here, I'd likely try the ebay part and see if you can get a mechanic to install it for you. Best of luck. Dan

The charger is covered for 15 years or 150,000 miles in Oregon and 9 other states under the Federal and California Emissions Warranty. The warranty for the charger is 8 years or 100,000 miles in all other states.
 
I just had my 2018 Clarity (86,000 miles) fixed -- got the car back yesterday. They fixed it under the CA Emissions Warranty and they kept the car 4 days for diagnosis, parts and repair. The diagnostic codes were: DTC P0D27 and P0D5C. They installed: battery charger 1C600-5WJ-A11 and coolant type-2 OL999-9011. I had a peek at the warranty repair order and it showed around $4800.
