Android Auto, messaging not working

LG V30s ThinQ running 8.0.0
My SMS come in to my phone, and if I happen to have the Android Auto screen up on the head unit I can see them, but if I don't, I don't get any notification a message has been received nor do I get text-to-voice.
Any suggestions?

Did they work before? There is a setting that says do not notify for messsages
 
It worked via BT before I installed AA but not now.
I've checked the settings on the phone, the only thing that appears amiss is that when I attach the USB it defaults to charging only but I can over-ride and allow data to pass.
