About Lexus snark

There is a report that Lexus is trash talking EVs so I wondered why:

Now my eye sees initially Lexus sales were running in parallel until April 2018. There after, Lexus sales were going flat as the Tesla deliveries increased.

To see the relationship, I plotted Tesla sales vs Lexus sales:

Sure enough, there is a straight-line relationship between Lexus and Tesla sales until Tesla went over 10,000 units. Then Lexus sales lagged.

Remember it is just not Tesla, it is the I-Pace, the Audi e-Tron, the Mercedes competitor etc. that will all supposedly hit in the next few months. They are all going to take aim at CUVs/SUVs in the Lexus segment. While it could be a defensive move against Tesla, it could also be a preemptive strike against the others. I am sure the honchos at Toyota are taking note of Tesla's raise and what it portends for the EV market.

My speculation is those models will sell to 'anything but a Tesla or Musk' buyers which I suspect is a vanishingly small market. Given past @David Green postings and the former fuel-cell advocate, well the pattern fits.

I remember seeing either a FOX or CNBC analyst who was critical of Elon and reported he had sold his personal Tesla. That vehicle sale could be to remove any ethic/bias issue versus his paycheck.

Possibly, but every sale of a luxury BEV means one less potential sale for Lexus. If you are anything but Tesla, Lexus is in the fray. If the customer says an Tesla competitor is OK for me, then Lexus loses. You cannot afford to ignore anyone. I am sure Lexus is running scared of Tesla and here is one ad that can take on both Tesla and the Tesla wannabes. I don't blame them for reacting they way Lexus did, I blame them for having ignored the trend.
