What about the infamous Mini rattles and creaks?

I've been hearing a clunky sound at around 50 mph. Sounds like I ran over a cardboard box or plastic tray. Could it be the front air dam shutters closing?

It could be that an underbody panel is loose? Is the noise/vibration in front or behind you?

It's just a one-time sound around that speed, seemingly from the front. I don't notice it frequently, but maybe once a week (driving 5 days/week).

I checked my shutters at the dealership, and they're solidly attached.

I'm at 1 year and 3 months. No rattles or squeaks (other than the cheap tire gage I keep in the glovebox (I had to wrap it in a napkin)). Given how quiet the car is it's rather amazing. The one noise that is bothersome though is a sharp plastic click noise I get from the accelerator pedal. I started a thread about it a few months back and nobody else seemed to have that problem. I need to get it looked at by the dealer but they are a ways away and I just haven't bothered to do it yet.

Mine developed an annoying rattle. It was the zipper pulls on the tire inflation kit rattling against each other. :D Seriously though, this is the most solid car I’ve ever owned.

I just ran across this article on the lack of AM radio in the i3, which contains Bimmercode instructions for activating it. I wonder if it would work on the SE.

My only rattle is my duty belt in the trunk. It's far more silent than any auto I've ever owned. Love it every day...

I asked if the SE had a secret AM radio like the i3, but the Bimmercoders said no.

Not sure if its just me but i dont seam to have any rattles and the mini se 2022 seems solid apart from the interior door grab handles. I cant help but focus on the slight cracking / creaking noise they make when you first open or close the doors or you jist grab them and give it a wiggle. It was also the case on my mini one but worse, has anybody else had this issue. Im fairly certain it is going to be a common issue with plastic rubbing against plastic in different temperatures. It isnt like a percistent noise as after you have pulled / pushed on the handle, it basically stops making any noise and still feels secure when making these noises. Has anybody else experienced these slightly creaking / cracking noises?

    1. Driver door lock stalk buzzes when locked.
    2. Glove compartment box foot well panel rattles
    3. Door seals pop when the chassis flexes. The seals need to be lubricated to keep those at bay.

  14. I've had ny '22 SE since October, approaching 2,000 miles now and remember hearing a squeak from my driver's door once. I've pushed the car beyond it's limits many times at SCCA solo events with sticky tires on it and keep up with a VW GTI driven by a better driver in my same class. I've ridden in one and was surprised at how harsh the ride is. Worse than my lowered FRS! I recommend you try the SE before making your decision. It's probably a more reliable car than the GTI and should cost you less to own.

I was just thinking about the AM radio (and @insightman) the other day when I wanted to listen to the baseball game in my SE. Fortunately there's also an FM broadcast for my team, but here's an article about the issue.

Automakers Are Starting to Drop AM Radio in New Cars. Here’s Why

Already, EVs from Audi, BMW, Porsche, Tesla, and Volvo are sold without AM radios, and it's been that way for years. BMW launched its first EVs, the i3 and i8, without AM receivers.
    ...
BMW and Volvo told me it was due to audio quality problems rooted in electromagnetic interference, of which EVs' drivetrains produce a significant amount.

That is my solution for AM radio for past six years in I3 now in SE high quality $25 Sony Dolby /Stereo crab I’m listening to when I need AM and really is not much interference what all manufacturers talking about 694ECF68-9DC8-4930-85B2-8914D15190C0.jpeg

Your handheld radio is isolated from the car’s power supply. I suspect much of the interference comes from conducted noise on the 12V power in the car, and not emitted noise over the air. Conducted noise is surprisingly difficult to filter out unless you purpose build circuits to do so. Even then, it finds a way around the filter (e.g. through the body and frame of the car). I’m guessing it’s just not worth it to the automakers for something that (they perceive) very few people use.

I have never listened to AM radio in a car. But then I just am not into any sports and now I have podcasts to listen to my shows over CarPlay on my own time.

I have a squeak that comes from the screen behind the steering wheel. Its the plastic housing rubbing/flexing against the screen itself. Anyone else have this and found a way to quiet it? I see a couple of screws and I'm tempted to open it up and mess with it myself.

No rattle or other noise from my under 2 years experience with the car. Very solid. Love it all the way to when i traded it in and welcomed home my Cross Turismo.

I have one in the dash over a few of the failed roads in Tucson. As soon as I get on the main streets & highways it’s gone. I learned a long time ago that it’s better to but up with minor squeaks and rattles rather than have them tear into the dash. Undoubtedly makes things worse.

I had posted about a mysterious rattle in this thread: https://www.insideevsforum.com/community/index.php?threads/developed-a-rattle.18590/#post-201694

And after some 'touch stuff while I'm driving" testing, I'm thinking my rattle (not squeak) comes from my center display as well.

I don't think I feel motivated to dis-assemble the display, so I may just live with it. Just knowing what is is helps me cope with it---the *mystery* rattle drive me nuts.

I'm happy to report that nothing else seems to be rattling or squeaking much, so it's actually pretty good (12K miles).

Mine is now 14 months old. No rattles. The only creaking is from the aftermarket anti roll bar, which is horrible.
