Mr. Fixit. Based on your last post I have an idea. I set my JuiceBox to a max output current of 32 Amps and got the chartering. The NEC states that any circuit can only run at 80% of rated capacity on a continuous basis. So a 40 amp breaker can only supply 32 amps continuous. Since the Juice box tells the onboard charger what it’s max capacity is I wonder if the charger is self limiting. My next full charge I will set the JuiceBox to 40 amps. I have it on a 50 amp breaker. The Clarity won’t charge above 32 so it should never reach the 80% load. I’ll report the results but It will be a few days. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
Sounds good... Mine is a 32A unit (with the 40A breaker) so I can'y try a higher setting. I expect that your experiment will demonstrate that the Juicebox is not self-limiting. I have seen some conflicting specifications, but I believe the Clarity charger is rated at 30A @ 240V = 7.2 kw. Thus even with a 32A EVSE setting, nothing should be self-limited. It will be interesting to see what you find... Thanks.
So I had a fully depleted battery and set the JuiceBox at a 40Amp charge rate it began to chatter within 30 min or so. Stopped the charge and reset to 24 Amps, no chatter. I’m considering that the fix. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
I have a dumb, non-configurable 48-Amp commercial ClipperCreek EVSE. Should I worry that I can't generate a graph that warns me about this horrible chattering?
I don’t know what’s going on when the charge rate moves up and down (Chatter). I saw no change in my car’s performance at all. It’s possibly completely normal behavior for the onboard charger. Lowering the rate seems to eliminate the chatter. Sent from my iPhone using Inside EVs
I'm not sure of your situation but I see the "Chatter" you are talking about on hot days when the fan is running during charging. Mine has always acted that way on hot days so I don't worry about it.
@Gary1 I am approaching 4 years with the Clarity. I did not see this once through three summers. Since June of this year, I get chattering every single time (unless I intentionally lower the current setting). So, my conclusion is that something has changed (other than the climate / temperature). Yes, I get fans running too when it is hot, but nothing different now vs. pre-chatter. Car has always been kept in the garage since day 1. I'm not so much worried... It's just different, and I would love to know why !
