I plan to sell the car in 3-5 years. The EV space is evolving so rapidly that I am pretty sure there will be some great options then. In fact, there are a few options already out there that I may be able to afford that I can't as easily afford right now. Polestar is making some great cars, so that's definitely one company I have on my radar.

As a side note, when you lease the car, the dealer is already factoring depreciation into the calculation. So if you, like me, have been driving considerably less since March, then you're probably getting a better deal due to lower mileage on your car than Kia/the dealership would have anticipated last year.

I realize depreciation sucks either way you cut it (buy or lease). My point was only that if you lease it, that depreciation rate will be "locked in" for 3 years based on perceived value today. When buying, your depreciation at time of sale is unknown. It could be less or much worse depending on whether the drivetrains continue to fail and shoppers decide to avoid these cars in the second-hand market.

I'm not advocating for either leasing or buying. Knowing what I know today, I would just avoid them entirely until there's proof that the issue has been resolved.

Oh - completely understood. My opinion in my own circumstance was that buying was a better deal than leasing due to my expectation of how the car will depreciate relative to what the lease cost was, based on how the Chevy Bolt has fared.

Ha, this keeps getting better. Called twice to confirm this dealership is EV certified, was told adamant YES both times "yes we can work on it, and we have one certified EV tech."

Got call today after paying out of pocket for Uber home ($40+) and wasting 2 hours of work time ($500+) that they can't work on it at all and come get it anytime. I'm asking they held ship from Minneapolis to Chicago or fly in a technician since this is total BS. If not I'll drive it myself.

Now dealership calls me back, suddenly yes they do hear the sound and they have opened a case with Kia corporate. Plan would be, if authorized, to ship the car to Chicago for service. Just crazy. Glad I didn't sell my old car yet!

After 2 hours at the dealership service center waiting, they said my transmission fluid was black and it should be gold, said I need a new transmission and they will call when it is in. Also, I was told by the CS that he has never heard of this problem? I mentioned others having the same issue but he said everyone is different and we will figure it out...I said OK as they would not listen to me. It's a shame we're all dummies online and do not legitimately know what we are talking about? Once the transmission is changed and the sound is still there, guess they'll change the motor???

  9. Yup, I went through the same thing with my Kona. Told them about the forums and motor replacement needed, but they dismissed that, and insisted on changing my gear reduction box. I went along with them (had no choice really), and sure enough, 400 kms later, the sound came back.

I reported it again, and this time they ordered the traction motor and I got that replaced. I wanted to tell them I told you so, but thought it better to not piss off the guys that are doing major maintenance work on my car. Anyway, a couple thousand kms later, all is still good. Hopefully this fix does it.

Not sure if comparing Bolt depreciation (vs MSRP) really applies here. It has lost its fed tax incentive. That is an automatic $7500 depreciation hit on any used EV that still qualifies if purchased new. Dealers are offering massive $13.5K discounts. There are many more competing options now compared to when it was first introduced and priced. It has a track record of many 100K+ mile cars (I know one example with 150K miles) still running on original drivetrain and battery. All these things have negative/positive effects on depreciation and make it difficult to compare to other similar msrp EVs.

With technology rapidly improving and many more options becoming available, I would expect all EV depreciation to accelerate. These cars could all become the next first-gen Leaf or BMW i3.

Maybe we can make a separate thread about depreciation. I don't like coming into this thread and reading info not related to the OP.

I have a loud clicking noise when coasting or accelerating at low speed. It started as an occasional sound and not very intrusive, but now it is constant and loud. I have approximately 32000 KM on odometer. Unrelated but my AC is not cooling as well. I will be calling dealership and investigating this.

Sadly that sure sounds like you have this same "issue" as the rest of us. As for me, I'm still waiting to hear back whether Kia Corporate is going to fix my car and ship it 400 miles to do so.

I wonder how gradual the grinding gets worse. Delaying till Kia have EV support locally is an option especially with the great warranty at least for stuff that is actually broken.

Unfortunately, this is precisely what happened to me. Good news is that motor replacements seem to be the de facto standard when it comes to Kia fixing this issue - unlike the dog's breakfast that is Hyundai's approach.

My dealer's now had my car for about two weeks. I called a couple days ago and they asked if I wanted to drive my car to Chicago for the work. And what exactly would I do during this full drivetrain de-and re-construction? The good news is that I am told that my local dealer is slated to get EV-certified in 2021, perhaps in alignment with MN's eventual move to ZEV status.

  18. Hey Wizziwig I am curious how your motor swap 10 months ago is holding up, what's your current mileage on your new motor?

Only about 5000 miles on the new 711 motor before the virus lockdown and indefinite transition to working from home.

I've let Kia Corporate know that I'm planning to initiate a Lemon Law claim on my car. We'll see what happens now. 30 days at dealer for repair is the triggering number under my state's lemon laws.

Got a very hostile and infantilizing call from a "Michael" at Kia Corporate. Not the type of customer service I was expecting for a brand new car with a major issue. Really not having a good first impression with Kia Motors thus far. Nevertheless, it sounds like they are going to work with closest EV dealership to get car fixed, somehow. I'd have no qualms making them buy this car back at this point just due to how they treated me.

  22. Very disappointing! There were times when companies cared about their customers. Sense like these times are over.

I first noticed the sound around three weeks ago but only on speeds between 30 to 50 mph. Just a few days ago, I heard it at very low speeds (around 5 to 10 mph). I'm wondering if that is the progression of this noise.

How long did you wait before bringing it in to the dealership? I'm afraid they won't hear it since it's very subtle. I already bought it in two weeks ago, but since it was only at high speeds, they said it's just normal noise from the axle.
