Dropped my 2019 at the dealer for several issues. My trunk hatch would not raise on it's own all the way, the sensor for the headlights would not turn off the headlights during the day once I backed out of my garage, my backup camera had moisture in it making it blurry and the most important was the tapping from the motor.
They also said there was a recall that they were going to take care of. They said it was to replace a wire going to a box? That is literally what he said. Anyone know what that is?
My dealer has EV trained personnel and I was able to speak to the guy that was going to look into the motor sound. I sent him the audio clip someone else posted on here as it was the exact sound my car is making. He said he was going to send that to Kia. He took the car for a drive and said he could not hear the noise but then listened to the audio clip again and then went for a second drive and heard it.
They fortunately gave me a loner to use.
They have had the car since Feb 10th and I have not heard a word about it since.
In all honesty I am hoping that they do not fix it too quickly as I would like to get rid of it. NJ Lemon law says after 20 days I can start the process. I leased it with the idea that the technology is changing so fast I would want a new EV in 3 years so I'm not sure how that would work with the lemon law. Do they just cancel the lease? Anyone have experience with it?

Kia has now more than doubled their first offer to pay me to keep the lemon Niro EV. They're now asking for full confidentiality in settlement. Not a chance
! I have state arbitration hearing this Friday and will finally have resolution by then.

More and more cases keep piling up if these forums and online boards are indicative.

Will Kia (& Hyundai) finally step up to the plate and take care of their customers?

Unfortunately, it'll come down to what cost more overall.

  5. Wow. What a study in contrasts.

The lease does not change much with a buyback situation. They will payoff whomever the leasing company is. That's probably Kia Motors Finance or Hyundai Finance I am guessing. This is no different than if your car was owned by the bank -- Kia would cut a check for the outstanding balance to them in that case. Same thing with a lease. Kia will also refund all of your payments, but the law generally allows a mileage deduction to come off of the amount owed to you. This mileage deduction is calculated based upon a formula that can vary from state to state. In Oregon, it is [purchase price] x [current miles] / 120000. Example: $41000 purchase price, 5000 current miles. $41000 x (5000 / 120000) = $1708 deduction from what they would owe you.

In some cases the MFR will waive the deduction of the value based on miles driven (at time of incident). The pro-rata based on 120,000 appears to be the norm.

I should correct myself: the [current mileage] in my formula should actually be the mileage at the time of the first reported incident. So, for example, you might have reported it at, say, 1500 miles but the car now has 5000 miles on it. They will calculate it based upon the 1500 number, not the 5000 number. My mistake. :)

Kia has had my car 13 days and just received a call that they installed a new motor. Not sure yet which version of the motor they installed but will check when I pick it up.
They are still waiting for a new backup camera and the parts to fix my hatch to come from Kia. Not sure how much longer that would take. I would have guessed the motor would be the part we would be waiting on but that came in last week he said.
I'll update when I pick up the car. Been happy with the service so far. So glad they gave me the loner to use. I cannot imagine having to have a rental this whole time.

For better or for worse, they're now stocking new motor units stateside in NJ. I presume you'll find you have the 712 motor. I'm glad this is working out so far for you.

Bubski--just curious. Did you have your arbitration hearing yet? If so, how did it go?

Hearing was last Friday. Kia showed up but didn't dispute any part of my case and presented no defenses or comments. Should hear results soon! Once it's all resolved I'll share even more details with those who are interested.

Just picked up the car. I do have the new 712 motor. Glad about that. Fingers crossed they figured out what is wrong and fixed it with this version.
The motor is silent and it may just be the old motor problem, but it seems the new motor has much stronger regen. My old motor seemed to be getting very weak.
They also replaced the struts that open my hatch as they were found to be leaking.
They found that my photo sensor that controls my headlights had an internal short and that is why my headlights were on all the time. They replaced that.
They found moisture in my backup camera and replaced that.
They also fixed whatever was recalled. I still have no idea what was recalled. I was not part of the water pump recall. All he said was it was a wire going to one of the control boxes. Anyone else with a 2019 Niro probably is affected by this. Should check with your dealer.

Quite a few issues with this car but I have to say they took it seriously and did a wonderful job replacing everything and it is like a brand new car.
All in all 15 days in the shop. Cannot imagine the bill if I had to pay out of pocket. I did see briefly his paperwork and I saw something that was $7000 some dollars. Not sure if that was a total or for the motor. My copy does not have prices.
Not so much happy with the problems but happy with the service.

Maybe it was me just forgetting, but I had the same thought when my 711 was installed. Car felt peppier and maybe more regen too.

Jayc1358: Glad to hear of your good service experience. Could you share the dealer info--I'm also in NJ and would be very helpful to know?

Has anyone here had their reduction drive and motor replaced in the Seattle area? My 2019 Niro EV is at 2000 miles and I'm starting to hear the tapping / card in spokes sound at low speeds and ideally I'd go to a dealer that has already helped someone with this, rather than try to convince someone that the problem exists.

The closest dealer near me is Kia of Renton. Their service department has done a few minor things for me and their attention to detail leaves a lot to be desired, so I'm not sure I'd trust them with such a major replacement.

Thankfully, my 2019 Niro EV hasn't had the tapping sound yet, but I am wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a dealer in Maryland, or failing that, in D.C. or Virginia, to go to in case that dreaded sound appears. My car was serviced at Bob Bell Kia near Baltimore, but I didn't come away feeling confident that they could handle a major repair.

After leaving the car a little over a month at the dealership (waiting for the parts to arrive by freight, then the work to be performed), we got it back with a new 712 motor. No return of the tapping/clicking so far.

I'm glad to hear all these new 712 replacement stories. I returned my car and now looking to lease again. Although all NiroEVs on dealer lot are going to have 710 motor (2020 models)
Waiting for 2021 Niro ev arrival , hoping they will have 712 motor.
