Spare tire that fits!

  1. Well, there is Honda Roadside Assistance. If you’re 50 miles from nowhere, with no spare, you’re going to have to wait for someone to show up. Unless it can be repaired with the kit.

The problem being that even if there is a tire store just a block away, Honda Roadside Assistance requires you to be towed to the nearest Honda dealership, even if it is 50 miles away.

  4. There’s a solution for almost every problem. If I had a tire that couldn’t be repaired with the Junior Ranger Kit in the trunk, I’d mosey on down to the open tire store a block away and inform them of my predicament.

I like the 18" spoked wheel. That's probably the extent of what I like. I'd say that the 135/70R18 tire is too small. It is 3.5% smaller in diameter (or circumference) than the Clarity stock OEM tires. I like the 145/80/17 option much better since it is less than 1% smaller than the Clarity OEM tires. You can buy this tire on a Infiniti Aluminum spoked wheel and all you need are lugs for the wheel and the hub-centric rings for Infiniti to Honda. Here is the Infiniti Wheel for comparison:

Also, I loved that they imply that driving at 81 mph with their spare is fine just because it is speed rated at 81 mph. Forget the fact that the tires are really mismatched on the car, compromising the heck out of the handling and stability.

The Infiniti spare is the one I use. Here is a picture of how I mounted it.

I was curious if anyone has actually had to use a spare tire on their Clarity? Or stories of just using the repair kit that came with the car.

    Yes, they are 12x1.5

I tore a pretty big hole in one a little over a year ago. I had a full size spare in the trunk at the time, so changed it and drove it home (about 100 miles). I eventually "repaired" the tire by doubling up a couple of larger "plugs". It would hold for a couple of months and then start a slow leak. I replaced the plugs a couple of times to stop the slow leak (but each time it eventually returned), and eventually replaced the tire when almost to the treadwear indicator. I don't want to ever use the sealant, just because I hate gumming up the resonators in the wheels, so I will stay with carrying plugs and a spare.

Was your spare from an Infinity? How did it fit? Do the honda lug nuts fit ok?

I have a full sized Nissan Maxima 18x8 wheel (v pattern) that looks like this:

I think this Nissan Maxima wheel design has the same +50 offset as well...

These will either use acorn (conical) or mag-type lugs. The one I have uses mag-type. Both will need the 64.1 mm to 66.1 mm hub centric ring adapter.

I also have the 17" Infiniti spoked aluminum temporary spare. It uses acorn (radial) lugs (but some of these also use mag-type so you have to see the wheel to know) and also needs the 64.1 to 66.1 hub centric ring adapter.

Thanks. I'm trying to find out here instead on the side of the road..

Just realized I erroneously put "Acorn (radial)" in the last part of my post. It should be "Acorn (Conical)". The original OEM lug nuts on the Honda Clarity are radius seats (ball, rounded, semi-circular). Acorn type are straight line tapered, like a cone. Sorry for the error.

Sorry to bump such an old thread.

I recently bought a 07-08 G35 17x4 Donut Spare (unfortunately I wasn't careful and it was a 165/80/R17 instead of the 145/80/R17 and this means the tire I bought was too large.

I'm going to have to replace the tire to the 145/80/R17 but something I can't quite figure out is the lug nut situation - do the Honda ones not work?

Perhaps they would work in an emergency if that's all you had, but they are not the correct shape for the Infiniti wheel.
As describe eloquently by @Robert_Alabama above, you need Acorn (conical) nuts.

These are what I purchased last year:

Amazon products sometimes come and go, so here is a screenshot of the details:

    * Make sure you have a compatible wrench - I bought a 'kit' with the spare that included a jack and a lug wrench.
The Infinity lug wrench did not fit, and I had to get a different one.

Also, you need the 64.1 to 66.1 hub-centric ring adapter.

You may have trouble finding a replacement tire. I don't think it is too common to replace them, but as you know, the tire you bought is about 4% too large. The 145/80/R17 is not perfect, but it is only off by 0.7%.

Thank you, this helps immensely, and was more useful than trying to decipher all the pages in this thread. Much appreciated!
