One left rail, one right rail, and 6 caps

    87270-J9000-PGY Rail
    87280-J9000-PGY Rail
    87293-J9000-PGY Caps

Please read entire thread. Installation requires dropping the headliner and drilling holes in the roof.

    Hey!

I live in Canada, picked up my Preferred a couple days ago (holy mother this car is awesome!), and it came standard with the rails.

I have a Yakima system already, but will need the Ridgeline towers to fit the rails.

Debating my roof rack system (and dealing with the range loss for my commute between interior BC and Vancouver, or getting a hitch on (for a bike rack), but reading here, it sounds like a cluster**** of an install that may... or may not void the warranty (no one seems to be entirely sure).

Either way, this car is mind blowing...

Installing a hitch was easy for a professional. I was expecting a problem but ordered it and they said it was routine. I'm not worried about the warranty either.

Looks like good options. Geoff, nice work on the factory side-rails! I'll keep that in mind, as we'll need to do something to rack this car in the future. I've seen home-installs of the landing pads go wrong, and lead to leaks. I think I'd prefer to stick with stock equipment.

Cool to see another Kona EV in Hancock County. I think I've spotted 3 in the Ellsworth/Surry/BlueHill area now.

Just bought a 2020 in the US and am trying to find out if anyone (Thule, Yakima, anyone? Bueller?) makes a naked roof option that doesn't require modification of the vehicle. I have invested more than a few dollars over the years in a Thule system for my 2008 Accord which is mountable to the roof using their "Foot Packs" that hook onto the lip inside the door frame. Are there no such systems for the Kona? I'm not finding any yet but have to believe they are out there.

    Thanks in advance.

Wow - thanks so much! Somehow I missed this when I searched it a few weeks ago. I guess I'll be selling my Thule system and switching to Yakima....

Yes. Hopefully these pictures upload. I figured out the best way for me was to mount the suction cups behind my sun roof. I was leery about mounting the cups to either the sun roof or windshield. BE WARNED- the rear hatch opens up pretty far, check clearance before you mount anything on the rack. I now have 2 fork-mount bike trays mounted BACKWARD so the bikes clear the hatch when open. Make sure you have strong wheel straps.

I like my set up, but I have not gone on a trip yet. Good luck!

I tried out the seasuckers last weekend. I set it up on top of the car with 2 bike trays and 2 bikes and drove a little over an hour to out ride location. My observations:

    1. They howl. It's manageable, but you will hear it. Perhaps its because the car is so quiet ;)
    2. The tubular bars are larger than some attachments can accommodate. I ended up replacing the hardware in my thule trays with the hardware store special with longer bolts so they reached around the bars OK.
    3. When I got to the bike path I realized I could not leave the rack on the car unattended. I has to disassemble the system and throw it in the back seat, which isn't bad. I used the opportunity to make the trays easier to remove and replace.
    4. Its not secure. If you run into the store or restaurant or whatever yes you take a chance unless you run a cable through everything to lock it up.
    5. On the cold morning of our first trip, the cups did loose some suction. When we made a pit stop I pumped a few of them back up. I believe this is because I did not wipe them clean enough like they recommend. Also when the temps go from very cold to very hot, the suction can be lost slightly as well.

Otherwise, I am happy and I did not have to modify my car at all. I am looking at a Thule box to buy (looking at the Sidekick because it is small) and like I mentoned, before you mount anything to they car first open the hatch to make sure you stay clear of it.

    Cheers.

Clean the frost off the car surface.

Leave the parts in your locked car.

Round two ready for this weekend. I changed the trays around and decided to use the two sturdier black bike trays I had as extra.

I mounted them backward to clear the sunroof and the hatch.
