12535 units produced for USA market 128 units has issued for recall means all owners have to see Dealer for inspection and BMW don’t know which one is a lemon ? with very conservative approach 12000 units just 5 hr. Inspection x $200 labor /hr which I my be wrong price wise for labor is going to be $ 12,000,000 and if you assume $30000 car on very low end is 400 cars lost to sell .But this is a learning curve for all EV manufacturers and customer have to suffer for all adventures with new technology .Count a time of 12000 owners in monetary loss also .And a question is why I need patch on HV battery which I pay for new good car ? IMG_1630.jpeg IMG_1629.jpeg Nobody or BMW or dealer contacted me or any owner of Mini SE.To inspected HV battery that unit have to be removed from undercarriage of a car is very complicated job and my estimates of price I believe are wrong much more !

I also checked the MINI recall lookup tool, and it came back basically empty for me as well... Besides saying it's a "High-Voltage Battery Software" recall. However, the letter I received in the mail last week indicates that it's campaign 24V-612.

Here's the full write up on 24V-612. It explains the timeline, root cause and remedy (which is a software update).

"Identification of Any Warning: The vehicle will display a warning message to the driver"

What is the message? Perhaps, "RUN!"

    Maybe it plays the theme from Mission Impossible while displaying "This vehicle will self-destruct in 5 . . . 4 . . .3 . . ."?

Estimated 5% is nearly 630cars… oh boy this is going to get interesting

    And yet:

"As of August 2024, BMW is aware of approximately 2 customer complaints, concerns, and/or field instances, that relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report."

So, either SE owners are just a happy, uncomplaining lot, far less than 630 vehicles* are actually affected, or it's going to take many more years/miles/charging cycles for any problems to really emerge.

*In the US. 5% of the 70-80k sold worldwide would be 3500-4000 cars.

ETA: To help put things in perspective, if you assume that the odds of a thermal event are 1:35000-1:40000, that's roughly equivalent of being killed by a lightening strike or a falling meteorite. A casual bowler apparently has better odds of scoring 300.

Car companies are notorious for downplaying customer concerns. An EV fire is also a very, very different thing than an ICEV fire and that should go without saying.

    Do mean in it’s rarity?

Definitely a lot different. ICE fire is much quicker, more explosive, and more likely to kill.

I lose absolutely no sleep over worrying about my SE battery.

    Me neither.

Now all those other lithium batteries in the house (snow blower, lawnmower, string trimmer, kids' old hoverboards, old laptops, old tablets, old digital camera, etc.) without any cooling or monitoring/safety systems are another story!

Hmm. Could I wire them all together and have my very own homebuilt Powerwall?

My car has thrown so many HV errors while terminating DCFCs, that I've started wondering if I can get bimmercode can hide the damn things so I that don't need to get the dealer to shrug and clear them.

    Google 'normalisation of deviance'.
